Meet the ULI Singapore WLI Sustainability Superheroes – A Fun, Frank & Fresh Exchange of Ideas
On 16 October 2024, ULI Singapore hosted "Meet the ULI Singapore Sustainability Superheroes", at 108 Robinson Road, where industry leaders shared their unique perspectives on sustainability across the real estate value chain. The lively session kicked off with panellists revealing their “sustainability superpower” and how key moments have shaped their approach to driving sustainability in their work.
A key highlight of the event was the candid discussion on industry misconceptions, expertly moderated by Joelle Chen, Head of Sustainability Asia Pacific at LaSalle Investment Management. Each speaker challenged stereotypes tied to their roles:
✨ Natalie Craig, CEO of Cushman & Wakefield, debunked the myth that facilities managers are too focused on short-term operations, showing how partnering facilities managers on longer-term projects and retrofitting older buildings can yield sustainability gains.
✨ Joyce Lo, Director of Private Capital Advisory Group at Lazard emphasized that investors are increasingly factoring in long-term risks like climate change and how progressive investors are aligning financial incentives with sustainability outcomes for their GPs.
✨ Anna Surgenor, Senior Consultant and Circular Economy Lead at Arup addressed common client pitfalls, stressing the importance of simplifying the message, realistic goal-setting and practical implementation for impactful results.
✨ Su Lin Wee, Executive Director and Head of Asset Management at PGIM Real Estate, tackled the misconception that sustainability poses excessive costs for building owners, offering insights on how sustainability can help protect value and future-proof assets.
Attendees gained valuable insights into the diverse aspects of sustainability across various roles — from investors to facility managers, asset managers, and consultants. They left with a renewed sense of community and motivation to implement practical sustainability strategies within the industry.
With its engaging format and frank exchanges, it was a call to action for the real estate community to embrace sustainability from every angle, making a tangible impact on our urban environment.
