    What does a CEO look like? He is always a white middle aged man - so say some Gen AI models. In new research, we found that 100% of 100 images generated by two Gen AI foundation models when promoted for a ‘CEO’ were exactly that. This week, we launched our Ethical Gen AI package, which includes the debut of our new Bias Breaker AI tool that has now gone live on our end-to-end Gen AI marketing platform, Pencil ✏️. We configured several of the most common elements of diversity in this first phase - age, race, ability, gender identity, and religion. So, when a user enters a simple prompt - eg ‘a CEO’ -  the tool adds a number of types of inclusivity, which will vary each time, creating a more sophisticated prompt to use in any image generation model. It adds positive bias towards a wide spectrum of diversity and intersectionality that current models simply do not provide for. Our research of 7 different Gen AI foundation models showed significant bias. Two of the models showed 100% male-appearing images in 100 generations when prompted for an image of a CEO. While another was 98% male, and two others offered male CEOs 86% and 85% of the time. The figure in reality is better - although far from equal. McKinsey’s Women in the Workplace study last year identified that 28% of C-suite roles were held by women and 10.4% of CEOs of Fortune 500 companies were female. Our Head of Emerging Tech, Rebecca Sykes 💫 , partnered with Tyra Jones-Hurst 💫 , Managing Partner of OLIVER Agency US and founder of InKroud Agency - part of The Brandtech Group - to test and frame Bias Breaker. “The answer to this problem of bias in Gen AI is far from set in stone but one thing’s for certain - brands and advertisers cannot simply accept bias as the status quo,” explains Tyra. 💥 Following this launch, we'll continue to analyze bias in AI training data, looking into more nuanced characteristics - from body shape to perpetuating stereotypes: what does ‘strong’ look like? what does a ‘menopausal woman’ look like? “Looking at CEO examples is just one way bias shows up, and the simple use case we have used to demonstrate the challenge and implications of not addressing bias,” adds Rebecca. “There are many other examples, ranging from the obvious - nurses and carers are mostly female, there is a stark lack of disability etc - to much more nuanced instances.     EU AI Act - are you ready? ⚖ ✍ The European Parliament’s landmark law governing AI finally came into force this month. While marketing mostly avoids the high risk tiers, there are areas that need attention. “Where marketers may need to focus is the limited risk tiers - risks associated with lack of transparency of AI usage,” explains Brandtech’s General Counsel Betty Louie. “Disclosing if content was generated by AI, designing the model to prevent it from generating illegal content, and publishing summaries of copyrighted data used for training.” ✍ If an AI system, such as a chatbot, is used, people should be made aware that they are interacting with a machine - and AI-generated content must be identifiable. The team experimented with hundreds of iterations of the shots, drawing up scenes across continents - which would be all but impossible without GenAI. And no one had to get on a plane for shoots or ship products round the world.     "This gorgeous and imaginative campaign from French luxury goods maker Lancel dispels the misconception that generative AI produces mediocre work," writes Periódico PublicidAD - Periódico de Publicidad, Comunicación Comercial y Marketing. 💥 Made entirely with The Brandtech Group’s Gen AI marketing platform, Pencil ✏️, the series of whimsical images - depicting a dreamlike journey undertaken by a bellboy that begins in Paris and passes through Tuscany, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, India, Bali and Japan - is running throughout June and beyond on a range of social platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn. 👜 The Lancel team was able to generate insights and hundreds of potential images for the campaign, experiment and get performance predictions using Pencil. A final set of 72 assets (8 cities with 9 versions each) were generated - and no one had to jump on a plane or ship products. 🌎 This feat would be impossible without Gen AI as experimenting with so many different plans and ideas would have been too costly and time-consuming. Furthermore, flying photographic teams around the world to all the locations would obviously have been an immense logistical operation. The campaign is an example of how a brilliant human creative team is enhanced by and can deliver so much more with AI. “Initially, we were torn between excitement at this daring adventure and preconceived ideas about the role of AI,” explains Lancel Marketing Director Marine Olivier 💫 . “It was almost magical, and at the same time, we had a certain apprehension, like the fear of being replaced by the machine. But as we immersed ourselves in this collaboration, we quickly realized that the human element remained at the heart of everything. Together, we have achieved something remarkable.
