Backing brilliant B2B founders 🦓 in Southeast Asia | Co-founder at Tin Men Capital | Linkedin Top Voice

We just led a new startup investment! Few founders have gone through what they have and bounced back. Our first investment in them was in 2018. A couple of years later, a global pandemic put the world in lockdown. - Their revenue went to $0 (you didn’t read this wrong) during CoVid - Founders slashed their salaries in solidarity w/ staff to stay afloat - Took strategic calculated risks to ride the recovery wave Since then, GlobalTix has become the largest ticket aggregator in Southeast Asia. ✳️ 150,000 experiences, 12,000 travel agents, 12,000,000+ tickets issued annually. ✳️ The preferred ticketing partner to attractions like Jewel Changi Airport, Taman Safari Indonesia, Merlin Entertainments. ✳️ Cashflow positive with highly capital-efficient operations I am inspired by their resilience, tenacity and resourcefulness. It was a no-brainer for us to back them again this round. We have high conviction in the founding team and their ability to not only excel in exuberant market environments, but even in the depths of the harshest global events. We at Tin Men Capital are happy and proud to support their latest Series B round alongside some great names: 🔸SEEDS Capital (State-owned fund) 🔸ORZON Ventures (A Thailand-based VC managed by 500 Thailand) 🔸A US Based Family Office (we actually got acquainted here on LinkedIn!) Congratulations are in order to: Chee Kong (CK) Chan Chee Chong Chan and the GlobalTix team. Greater heights await. 📷 : Photos from Globaltix’s 10th anniversary party

It’s not often that you get to revisit the the last 20+ years of your career. In ‘The Front Row Podcast’ episode with Keith Yap, we did just that. Keith asked me some incisive questions that brought out some very fond memories and lessons that shaped my journey since junior college days till now. Some that I had almost forgotten myself till he asked. We dug into some key decisions and milestones like: ❇️ Why I turned down a big job in finance and what led me to start Tin Men Capital ❇️ How Murli and I developed our fund thesis to suit the uniqueness of Southeast asia ❇️ How we think about investing and what makes a strong founding team And more. Keith is doing an amazing job documenting the amazing work of change makers like Woon Tai Ho and I am honoured I made the cut.  He does an amazing job prepping with his research and questions. I am sharing to bring awareness to the great work and initiative that Keith is committed to. Keith quit his full time job at ESG to focus on this full-time. I hope you will enjoy all the episodes from his podcast. Will leave a link it in the comments to Keith's channel and this interview.

Jeremy Tan from Tin Men Capital is one of the familiar faces in the Singapore Venture Capital Scene. Before that, he spends 20 years in corporate finance, and these are his takeaways during his time working corporate that got him to where he is today. These lessons should apply to us still working in the corporate trenches: ✅ First Principles Thinking  Lesson in the mindset, always fallback to the 5 whys, breakdown all assumption to its essential bare thing and come up with an original answer/solution. If you are still unsure of what First Principles thinking is, you can refer to the link in the comment on a real-world example of how Elon Musk uses this concept when he is starting SpaceX. ✅ Visible and Articulate Hardwork is a given to be successful, but is not enough, we need to be visible within the organization. On top of that, the killer thing is being able to synthesize your thoughts on the spot/on the fly in a concise, clear and impactful way; The Mind to Mouth Connection. This is important to convince management, your peers or your team for a buy-in into your idea and vision. ✅ Power of (Good) Network  Leverage on your connections and relations, always look for that connection. It may not be apparent immediately, but it can prove to be useful, the key here is to be sincere when you are building your network. Here I'd like to use an apropos "Luck is when Preparation meets Opportunity". Opportunity comes more often when you have a good network. ✅ Actively Listening and Being Sincere A crucial communication skill regardless professionally of personally. This type of listening opens up people and builds trust. People can pick up cues if we are being sincere, and from there creates connection and builds trust. 👏 Kudos to Keith Yap for doing the podcast, have a look at it, there is a lot of wisdom to unpack (1 hour worth of listening!). 🔗 Link to the podcast in the comment.

Investors need to hold founders accountable to the deliverables they promised. In this case, Wei Zhuang (Lenard) Tan needs to eat pickled fish. He made a post some time back about promising to eat a spoonful of Surströmming 🤢 (pickled fish) if Ailytics won the “Most Liked Startup award” at the ConTech Summit. And since VCs never forget… We know Wei Zhuang to be a man of his word, and sponsored the Surströmming (ikr, perpetuating the impression of VCs being big spenders 🤭).  After our monthly meeting, we gathered at our patio to watch him deliver on that promise. Needless to say it was a lot of fun, mostly for the bystanders. (including his co-founder Prateek Manocha) We’re happy when founders make good progress - milestones are worth celebrating. Or in this case, inducing a forfeit for. Enjoy the video. Any suggestions on the next odd thing we should feed him next?
