Tall buildings have risen to prominence in many urban centres. One of the major reasons is economic feasibility. Sky-high buildings can generate sky-high returns. Can the financial returns be balanced by environmental returns? Exploring self-sufficiency in architecture (2 / 2) In remote regions, construction can be challenging due to issues such as lack of skilled labour and infrastructure. Designed by Local Studio Architecture & Urban Design, the remote Lapalala Wilderness School in Limpopo, South Africa, counters this challenge by creating self-sufficient systems and using local resources, which minimise dependence on external means for building construction, operation, and maintenance. Are tall buildings environmental foes or allies? In the quest to make future cities sustainable, tall buildings have been both extensively vilified and expressly commended. By increasing density, they can reduce urban sprawl and make cities more efficient. At the same time, they are energy guzzlers; it takes massive amounts of power to build, operate, and maintain them. How, then, do we determine the path forward? Find out in this very first explainer video by Ecogradia, where our editor-in-chief and sustainable design expert Nirmal Kishnani explains: 1️⃣ The evolution of tall buildings through time; 2️⃣ How culture has shaped our perception of skyscrapers; 3️⃣ What problems tall buildings can create, and what they can solve; 4️⃣ Radical new experiments in building sustainable skyscrapers; And much more! Every design project brings its own set of obstacles. This is even more true for public projects, where many different stakeholders are involved. Engaging the local community throughout the design process, explains Carlos Zarco Sanz of openact architecture, can help create a sense of ownership towards the project. This, in turn, can become the “common force” to navigate roadblocks. …......…............................................................. Exploring self-sufficiency in architecture (1 / 2) In regions that lack access to basic infrastructure such as electricity and water, how can architecture strive for autonomy, and make communities more resilient? Designed by Morphogenesis, The Lodsi Community Project for Forest Essentials in Rishikesh, India, is an off the grid factory that supports an entire village socially, culturally, and economically. Most public landscapes are maintained by the state. If conflicts arise, their upkeep can take a backseat, causing the space to deteriorate over time. To circumvent this issue, the regenerative landscape of Stream Co-Habitat in Istanbul, Turkey, is designed to minimise resource use and cost, allowing nature to “self-sustain, self-maintain, and self-regulate”. Carlos Zarco Sanz of openact architecture explains more in this video. …......…............................................................. Landscapes are always evolving. How can landscape designers use this quality to their advantage? When the Urban Nature Park in London, UK, opened recently to a huge volume of visitors (~27,000 per day), it was the ultimate pressure test. Close monitoring of the project revealed that some of the real life use patterns did not match the anticipated ones. However, the flexibility afforded by landscapes allowed the design team to make the needed changes on site. With continual increments, the team believes that the project will only get better with time. The three layers of urban nature ✨🌿🌆 Stream Co-Habitat is an ongoing regenerative design project that aims to revive the degraded ecology of Tuzla peninsula in Istanbul, Turkey. To do so, it proposes a 7.5-kilometre-long looping green corridor, spread across an area of 25.5 hectares, that will comprise three layers of design: 1️⃣ The ecological loop 2️⃣ The programmatic loop 3️⃣ The circulation loop To find out what these layers are, and how together they can create vibrant urban landscapes, watch this snippet of our conversation with Carlos Zarco Sanz of openact architecture from the new episode of our limited webinar series. ‘Urban biodiversity: Crafting biocentric public spaces,’ out now on YouTube / Spotify / Apple Podcasts. How to design for psychological well-being? The Lower School campus of Westmark School in Los Angeles, USA, pioneers a neuroscience-driven design approach to support the well-being and learning of neurodiverse students. This video highlights the various interventions, from the planning and placement of the classrooms to the materials and finishes used, that contribute to creating an environment that encourages students to thrive. The project has been designed by NBBJ Design, in collaboration with neuroscientist Dr John Medina, and the larger Westmark community. 📷: Ty Cole …......….............................................................
