🌬🌏 The results of a climate outlook survey published by a Singapore think tank this week signals that the shifting winds of geopolitics could be impacting the dynamics of climate governance. 🇯🇵 The survey found that Southeast Asians could be losing confidence in the EU and US taking the lead on climate action – and have, for the first time, named Japan as a potential leader.  🗞 🔔 Read more in the latest edition of EB Insights, a condensed version of 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆. Corporations hiring sustainability personnel from consultancies could be creating a gulf in consulting expertise for companies to tap into, a recruiter suggested at a business summit in Hong Kong last week. Speaking on a panel at the ReThink conference on Thursday, Paddy Balfour, Asia Pacific executive director for recruiting firm Acre, said that the “industry is eating itself” as corporations hire from consultancies to meet a growing demand for environmental, social and governance (ESG) knowhow. “Specialist consultants are getting hired into corporates. Corporates then go back to the consultants to get specialist advice – and realise there is no one there,” Balfour said. This has led to companies searching for more inhouse expertise, which is hard to find, he said. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gb6ZzANy

The United States is preoccupied with preventing China from threatening its hegemony in the global arena and the world will see geopolitics interfering with effective climate leadership, with common sense and rationality taking a backseat over the next decade, says Singaporean former diplomat Kishore Mahbubani. “I predict that the priority of the US and China in the next 10 years will not be climate change,” said the ex-veteran diplomat to decision-makers in the government and business sector at a sustainable finance conference held in Singapore last Thursday. “It will be about who is going to be number one,” he said. When geopolitics interferes, humanity cannot choose the best leaders to tackle climate change, warned the Singaporean ex-diplomat at the Unlocking capital for sustainability forum held last week. According to the Southeast Asia Climate Outlook Survey recently published by Singapore-based research centre ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute (ISEAS), the shifting winds of geopolitics could be impacting the dynamics of #climategovernance. Southeast Asians may be losing confidence in the European Union and the United States taking the global lead on climate action. For the first time in an annual sentiment survey, more respondents from the region chose Japan to lead the world in achieving its #ParisAgreement goals, instead of the EU or the US. There appears to be a leadership void, experts say. The Paris accord is a legally binding global treaty on #climatechange ratified by more than 190 countries to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2050, compared to pre-industrial levels. Stemming #deforestation in Southeast Asia – a region which loses 1.2 per cent of its forests each year and is poised to lose three quarters of its original forests by the end of this century – is “not costly” compared to other #emissionsmitigation measures, said Singapore’s inaugural #climateaction ambassador Ravi Menon. Citing estimates, he says a carbon price of just US$20 per tonne could halve Southeast Asia’s deforestation rate. At the Unlocking capital for sustainability 2024 summit, he cautioned that Asia cannot compromise on emissions cuts even as it pursues growth. The loss of carbon sinks has “serious implications”. 📆 We hosted our 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹-𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 ‘Advancing sustainable finance for nature in Asia’ on 11 September with United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI). 🐅🏫 Throughout the class, we were continually reminded of the complex interrelationships between humans and nature and biodiversity. The ramifications of excessive land use and clearance cascades down to every level of nature: "When the tigers go, the schools do too." 🌿 Our esteemed speakers emphasised the importance of vigilance and hope. Nature and biodiversity conservation are neither new nor complicated. Climate action is already being taken — it's simply a matter of re-framing what is being done. Eco-Business is grateful for the support of all our partners and for the enthusiastic response from attendees. Keen to join our other events? For the first time, the Philippines has released a plan for how it will reduce harmful greenhouse gases by 2030, three years after it submitted to the United Nations (UN) its nationally determined contribution (NDC) target to curb emissions by 75 per cent by 2030. But 72.29 per cent of this aim is conditional, and will only be met through funding and assistance from the international community. The government has pledged to use its own resources to meet the remaining 2.71 per cent. The newly-published implementation plan mentions that the country will need a specific amount of US$72 billion to fulfill its NDC goal, which is lacking in most propositions. But it did not mention a net zero pledge, which has been eagerly awaited by observers in previous climate conferences. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gcSqBe_X

“It is in Asia that the battle against climate change will be won or lost,” said Singapore's climate ambassador Ravi Menon, National Climate Change Secretariat, Singapore former chief of Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) at the Singapore edition of Unlocking capital for sustainability last week. The conversations held at our conference last Thursday reminded us: Asia needs all the support it can get to chart transition pathways that are relevant and contextualised for local communities. We were delighted by the range of discussions held last week and are excited to see how the conversations on sustainable finance will accelerate in the future!
