Association of Women for Action and Research: Singapore's leading gender equality advocacy group.

About us

AWARE is Singapore's leading gender equality advocacy group. AWARE believes in the rights of women and men to make informed and responsible choices about their lives, and to have equal opportunities in education, marriage and employment, and in the right of women to control their own bodies, particularly with regard to sexual and reproductive rights. Since its formation in 1985, AWARE has carried out research into numerous issues affecting women, including workplace harassment, poverty of older women and Singapore's compliance with UN anti-gender discrimination standards. AWARE's Support Services provides crisis counselling, legal advice to women in need and the newly established Sexual Assault Care Centre offers support to victims of sexual assault. AWARE's public education arm consists of youth-focused outreach campaigns and a corporate training arm, which offers training on workplace harassment, unconscious bias and diversity and inclusion. AWARE is a not-for-profit organisation. We are funded by donations, grants and member subscriptions. We are a registered charity with Institute of Public Character status, so all donations to AWARE are tax-deductible.

Even as our courts exemplify how to create a society that supports victim-survivors, individuals too can help victim-survivors dealing with such trauma. Our Sexual Assault First Responder Training helps familiarise participants with trauma reactions and provides advice on how to best support a victim-survivor to assist in their healing. For more information, head to https://tinyurl.com/SAFRT. #legal #justice (Please note that we are not a crisis centre, and our walk-in service has been discontinued. Please call us at 1800 777 5555 from Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. or visit https://sacc.aware.org.sg/ to access relevant internal or external services. If you require immediate support, do take actions to prioritise your safety, such as calling the police at 999 in an emergency.)

We applaud PM Wong's recent commitment at the PAP Women's Wing Conference, to increase the number of women PAP candidates in the next election. We hope this increase is also reflected in Cabinet — right now, only three out of 19 ministers are women. Gender equality in all walks of life will benefit everyone in Singapore—in the home, in the workplace, and in Cabinet.

This week, AWARE ran its first “Gender and Media” workshop tailored to journalists with the Asia Journalism Fellowship. Over the course of a day, 17 journalists from across 14 Asian countries and territories spoke with us about gender inequality in the newsroom, gender stereotyping, gender and trauma-sensitive reporting, and harassment faced by journalists, both in and outside the newsroom. We thank ALAN JOHN for inviting us to explore these issues with Asia's outstanding journalists!

"PM Wong’s direct call for fathers to step up and share in the caregiving duties, and his recognition of women’s career ambitions, is a significant move," Sugidha Nithiananthan, Director of Advocacy, Research and Communications at AWARE, wrote in an op-ed published on The Straits Times. "Policy changes are only part of the puzzle. Employers need to not only allow but also actively encourage both fathers and mothers to take their leave. Until caregiving is actually a shared burden, young women will continue to think twice about starting a family." This year's #NationalDayRally was a big win for families. We're excited to see women's careers and families take centre stage, but there are still gaps that need to be closed. Policies are the first step—men and women need to reexamine their roles when they care for their families. Additionally, unwed parents still do not have access to the same benefits and tax rebates as married parents.
