Over the last two decades, the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and APRIL Group have collaborated to drive innovation in sustainable forest management. In a recent article in Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, Eduward Ginting, Chief Operations Officer, PT. Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper, the operating arm of APRIL Group, spoke about how the partnership has empowered the company in advancing its #sustainability efforts. Eduward, who is a Master’s graduate of KTH, said: “KTH is one of the world’s leading universities in pulp and paper technology. Our collaboration with KTH keeps us updated with innovative technology that promotes sustainability in our forests and factories”. As part of the ongoing exchange between the two organisations, APRIL continues to send employees to KTH to further their education in the pulp and paper industry. Fiberline Area Head Widi Suganda was one of APRIL’s talents who studied at KTH and received his Master’s degree in macromolecular materials last year. “Those were fantastic years. The knowledge I gained means a lot in my daily activities at APRIL and became a springboard for my career”. KTH’s professor, Mikael Lindström, highlighted the mutual benefits of the partnership: APRIL employees gain specialized education in their field, while KTH students benefit from real world exposure to APRIL’s operations. APRIL was proud to share research updates at the XXXIII edition of the recent Brazilian Congress of Weed Science. The event, held at Expo Dom Pedro in Campinas, was organized by the Brazilian Society of Weed Science and attracted a diverse audience, including researchers, academics, students, business professionals, agronomists, and rural producers. The congress serves as a platform for discussing cutting-edge management strategies in weed control. Two young Indonesian researchers from APRIL Group, from the Fiber Research & Development Department, showcased significant #research findings at the congress. Syahanda R. Siregar, shared insights into how various types of herbicides can negatively impact the growth of acacia crassicarpa plantations if improperly used, emphasizing that contact herbicides are safer for young plantations compared to systemic herbicides like glyphosate. Additionally, Ratih Hartono Putri, presented her research on the efficacy of 15 different herbicides in managing invasive species in eucalyptus plantations in Riau province. Her findings highlight that pre-emergent herbicides, or soil-effective herbicides, achieved up to 100% reduction in the germination of some of the most aggressive invasive species seeds. These advancements contribute to more effective weed management strategies and underscore APRIL's commitment to advancing its #sustainable plantation and land management practices.

Meet Atan Gulong and Seri Manis, two Sunda Pangolins, a critically endangered species with fewer than 1,000 remaining in Southeast Asia. Originally exhibited at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, the 400kg sculpture underscores the vital role of pangolins in controlling insect populations and maintaining ecological balance and now resides at the Riau Complex in Pangkalan Kerinci. As part of our commitment to protecting nature and supporting the #conservation of flora and fauna, APRIL, a member of the RGE group of companies, was a proud sponsor of "Love The Last March" in Singapore, a global art movement to raise awareness and funds for endangered species. These pangolins and 61 other endangered species were part of the world’s longest bronze sculpture, spanning 192 meters, celebrating the beautiful diversity of the planet.

APRIL Group is proud to have received the Anugerah Ekonomi Hijau Award from Detikcom for its ongoing forest restoration efforts through the Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) program since 2013. Anita Bernardus, Director of Corporate Communications at APRIL Group, accepted the award. We are particularly proud of the program’s success in restoring 150,000 hectares of tropical peat swamp forest in the Kampar Peninsula and Pulau Padang. But our commitment doesn’t end there! We remain committed to our 1-for-1 initiative, conserving one hectare of land for every hectare managed for production. By doing so, we align with the Indonesian government’s goal of achieving a Forestry and Other Land Uses (FOLU) Net Sink by 2030. #APRIL2030 #ClimatePositive #AnugerahEkonomiHijau #ekonomihijau
