What’s going on with the lights atop Salesforce Tower?

Earlier this week, the tip of the impossible-to-miss Salesforce Tower lit up in multi-colored hues. That’s because the tower is in the process of testing out their upcoming LED light piece by visual artist Jim Campbell.

“We may have more testing within the next few weeks, but we don’t have a set schedule,” Cheryl Sanclemente, director of corporate communications at Salesforce, tells Curbed SF.

As for when exactly the final light piece will go live, that’s anyone guess.

“We also haven’t landed on a launch date for the Jim Campbell art display,” says Sanclemente.

The exterior crown of the tower, made up of the aluminum paneling, will be lit with roughly 11,000 LED lights, which will display low-resolution moving imagery. The work will feature a combination of pre-recorded images and photos taken around the city.

“Never having been done before in the context of architecture, the LEDs will be mounted onto the outside of the building facing inward,” Campbell said in 2017. “This process of reflecting the light off of the surface...creates a soft and continuous image instead of a harsh direct image like a Times Square video screen.”
