We work with you to understand your needs and goals. Community solar is for customers who seek to generate revenue by leasing large parcels of real estate to a solar developer. With community solar, customers lease their land to developers who then install and maintain the solar panels. The customer can use up to 40% of this solar power, and the developer sells the remaining power to the local community.
NYPA provides end-to-end service including impartial advice about whether community solar is the right solution for you. We then identify the right developer for your project, and lead you through the financing and other decisions.
Community solar is sited on a large parcel of land or large roof, and the community solar customer will receive lease payments from a developer in exchange for development of solar on the customer’s property. With community solar, the expectation is that the customer will only use some of the solar generated. On-site solar is for those that wish to generate solar energy mostly for their own use.
- With community solar, the customer leases their property to a developer, who owns the solar asset. The customer can purchase up to 40% of the energy they generate, and the developer sells 60% or more of the energy to other users. The customer hosting the installation receives a lease payment from the developer for the lifetime of the asset.
- With on-site solar, the customer installs the solar panels and places the battery for their own use. They might own or lease the solar asset, depending on their goals.
With community solar, the developer covers the cost of the installation and the customer only pays for the energy that is used. The customer is only required to pay NYPA if NYPA performs a detailed analysis and the customer chooses not to proceed.
NYPA has a stable of over 40 solar developers that are qualified to work in New York State.
We meet with you to understand your goals. We then evaluate the shade/light levels and opportunities for placement of solar panels. NYPA also reviews macro factors such as energy prices, available incentives, and the likelihood for interconnection approval. If a site is not a good fit because of structural issues, economics, or location, we will let you know.
Each community solar project is unique, and NYPA provides objective analysis and advice to help you understand if you can achieve your goals with solar.
If the site is determined to be a good option for community solar, we will develop an Authorization to Proceed (ATP) and upon your approval, NYPA will then create a detailed economic assessment and design.
