University College, informally known as Castle, is the oldest constituent college of Durham University in England. Centred on Durham Castle on Palace Green, it was founded in 1832 by William van Mildert, Bishop of Durham.
Sitting at the heart of Durham's World Heritage Site and occupied continuously since the 11th century, the Castle is now home to the students of University College, part of Durham University. Visitors are welcome to join our guided tours and special events.
University College or “Castle” is a thriving living community within Durham University. We have some 750 undergraduates and 700 postgraduates, and 300 members of University staff are attached to the College through the Senior Common Room.
