- 2:09U.S. truce push struggles as scores killed in Israeli strikesReuters VideosSTORY: Injured Palestinians are rushed to the hospital after Israeli fire hit Gaza's Nuseirat camp. At least ten were killed at a school sheltering the displaced, medics said. They said about 60 people were killed and dozens more injured overnight and into Friday (November 1) morning in Israeli strikes, mainly on Deir Al-Balah, Nuseirat and the town of Al-Zawayda, all in central Gaza as a U.S.-led diplomatic push for a ceasefire there and in Lebanon floundered. Salah Abdel Hadi of Gaza's civil defense arrived at one of the sites in the dark to find many dead. “There are a number of martyrs, from three families. Their flesh was all mixed together, the families, the martyrs, no one knew who was who. There are still some martyrs under the rubble and we lack capabilities, bulldozers and fuel.” The Israeli military said its troops had killed what it called armed terrorists in central Gaza and northern Gaza's Jabalia area. It had no immediate comment on the reported school strike, although it habitually denies targeting civilians. Israeli offensives against Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon have continued despite the truce efforts. And hope is fading that one can be reached before next Tuesday's U.S. election. In Beirut, smoke billowed from the site of renewed Israeli strikes on the southern suburbs on Friday morning - the first bombardment in nearly a week on what was once a densely packed district and Hezbollah stronghold. Israel issued evacuation orders for 10 separate neighborhoods but the attacks began before the last ones were published. Hezbollah began firing rockets at Israel in solidarity with Palestinians a day after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel last October 7. Lebanon's caretaker prime minister Najib Mikati accused Israel of "stubbornness" in the latest negotiations, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his priority was to enforce security "despite any pressure or constraints."2 days ago

Everything's breaking, the windows, the roof, everything, the blast is here in my house." “In those moments, I saw my daughter, who is two years old, all covered in missile dust and looking at me." :: One-year-old Ivana is now recovering from third-degree burns over nearly half of her body "She is living with her pain, and in shock. Even if children do not express it, they still feel it. She is a baby who can't express herself, she is two years old in a month, she can't express herself. She is living with her pain, and her pain was even worse at first. Our heart aches with her. We are staying strong for her.” Skayki and his family were preparing to escape their home in southern Lebanon's Tyre District on September 23 when they started hearing and feeling the impact of Israeli strikes. The father of two spoke on Wednesday (October 30) from a hospital in Beirut where Ivana, his almost two-year-old toddler was still receiving treatment. Ivana, wrapped in layers of bandages, suffered third-degree burns over nearly half of her body. She was first treated elsewhere in Lebanon before moving to the Lebanese Geitaoui Hospital, which has a burn center. Israeli forces launched on September 23 airstrikes that Lebanese authorities said had killed more than 500 people and sent tens of thousands fleeing for safety. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah erupted one year ago when the Lebanese armed group began launching rockets at northern Israel in support of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, at the start of the Gaza war. It has intensified in recent weeks, with Israel bombing southern Lebanon, Beirut's southern suburbs and the Bekaa Valley, killing many of Hezbollah's top leaders and sending ground troops across the border. Hezbollah for its part has fired rockets deeper into Israel. More than 2,700 people have been killed in Lebanon and 1.2 million were displaced, according to Beirut authorities. Israel says around 50 soldiers and civilians have been killed and some 60,000 residents of northern Israeli communities displaced.4 days ago

A warning: this video contains graphic images. Gaza's health ministry said the building was packed with members of the extended Abu Nasser family, along with others displaced by the fighting. Ismail Ouaida said he was an eyewitness to the attack: "The house of the Abu Nasser family in Beit Lahiya's Project neighborhood was bombed. It is formed of four floors, there are tens of martyrs - tens of displaced people were living in this house. The house was bombed without prior warning. As you can see, martyrs here and there, with body parts hanging on the walls - the neighbours and everything in Beit Lahiya, residents of Beit Lahiya” The health ministry said at least 93 people were dead or missing, and that 20 of those killed were children. There was no immediate Israeli military comment. The Israeli military has said the operations aim to prevent a revival of Hamas in the area after more than a year of bloody conflict. :: October 7, 2023 The war was sparked when Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people in a rampage across southern Israeli communities and took over 250 hostages, on October 7, 2023, according to Israeli tallies. :: Israeli army Israel has vowed no end to the war until it wipes out Hamas as a military force and governing entity in Gaza. :: October 27, 2023 Gaza's health ministry says the death toll from Israel's air and ground offensive has exceeded 43,000. :: Shati Camp, Gaza Worries over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsened... :: Deir el-Balah, Gaza after Israel on Monday passed a law banning the United Nations agency known as UNRWA that coordinates relief for Palestinians in the occupied territories. :: Geneva, Switzerland "If UNRWA are unable to operate, you would likely see the collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza." James Elder, a spokesperson for UNICEF, told reporters on Tuesday the decision would lead to more avoidable deaths. "So a decision such as this suddenly means that a new way has been found to kill children." Israel said the move against UNRWA was due to what it said was evidence employees of the agency had aided and participated in the Oct. 7 attack last year.5 days ago
- 2:03Israel bans UN aid agency UNRWA from operating in the countryReuters VideosSTORY: Israel passed a law on Monday banning the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA from operating in the country. Lawmakers cited what they described as the involvement of some UNRWA staffers in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel, and said staffers had membership in Hamas and other armed groups. The legislation could impact the agency’s work in war-torn Gaza, where Israel has been fighting Hamas militants for a year. It could also hit UNRWA institutions in East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed in a move not recognized abroad. But the law does not refer to operations in the Palestinian territories or elsewhere. The legislation has alarmed the United Nations and some of Israel's Western allies, who fear it could further worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. Prior to Israel’s passage of the legislation, the U.S. State Department on Monday said it was ‘deeply concerned’ by the proposed ban: "So we continue to urge the government of Israel to pause the implementation of this legislation." UNRWA head Philippe Lazzarini called the vote a "dangerous precedent" that opposes the U.N. charter and violates Israel's obligation under international law. He added: "This is the latest in the ongoing campaign to discredit UNRWA and delegitimize its role towards providing human-development assistance and services to #Palestine Refugees.” UNRWA employs tens of thousands of workers and provides education, health services and aid to millions of Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. It has long had tense relations with Israel, but ties have deteriorated sharply since the start of the war in Gaza. The U.N. said in August that nine UNRWA staff may have been involved in the Oct. 7 assault and had been fired. A Hamas commander in Lebanon, who was killed last month in an Israeli strike, was found to have worked for the agency. Another commander killed in Gaza last week doubled as a U.N. aid worker. UNRWA confirmed both men had been employees.5 days ago

- 2:14Iran Supreme Leader: don't downplay or exaggerate Israeli strikesReuters VideosSTORY: Leader’s of Israel and Iran on Sunday appeared to give conflicting accounts of Israel’s attack on Iran a day earlier– with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying the airstrikes ‘hit hard’ Iran’s defenses and missile production, and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei saying that narrative was 'exaggerated.’ Netanyahu spoke at a memorial service for soldiers killed in the Israel-Hamas war on Sunday. "In the early morning hours of Saturday, we fulfilled our promise. The air force attacked throughout Iran. We hit hard Iran's defense capabilities and its ability to produce missiles that are aimed at us.” "The attack in Iran was precise and powerful and achieved all of its objectives." :: October 26, 2024 :: Tehran, Iran The heavily armed arch-enemies have engaged in a cycle of retaliatory moves against each other for months. Saturday's long-anticipated strike involved scores of fighter jets bombing targets near the capital Tehran and in western provinces. At least four soldiers were killed. :: October 1, 2024 :: Jerusalem The attack came after an Iranian missile barrage directed at Israel on Oct. 1, much of which Israel said was downed by its air defenses. Khamenei on Sunday said the country was weighing its response, while disputing Israel’s account. “The second point is related to this evil move that Israel made here two nights ago.Well, they made a mistake. They, of course, exaggerated it; their exaggeration is wrong, but note that downplaying it is also wrong; Saying, no, there was nothing, It wasn't important and ... this is also wrong." "The calculation error of the Zionist regime needs to be disrupted; they have a calculation error regarding Iran." With warfare raging in Gaza and Lebanon, direct confrontation between Israel and Iran risks spiraling into a regional conflagration. But a day after the airstrikes, there was no sign they would spark further escalation. A Senior administration official for U.S. President Joe Biden said the attacks were a proportional response to Iran’s earlier strikes, with low risk of civilian harm, while Biden has called for a halt to the escalation.6 days ago
- 1:46Deadly Israeli strikes in Gaza cast shadow as talks resumeReuters VideosSTORY: :: WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT Israeli airstrikes killed dozens of Palestinians mostly in northern Gaza on Sunday (October 27). That’s according to medics and the Palestinian official news agency, and comes as efforts by mediators to secure a ceasefire resumed in Qatar. :: Shati Camp, Gaza This video obtained by Reuters shows the aftermath of an attack on a school sheltering displaced families in Gaza City. Health officials say at least nine people were killed and at least 20 others wounded. Three local journalists were among those who had been killed, according to Hamas media. The Israeli military say they are looking into reports of the strike. Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah al-Sisi proposed on Sunday an initial two-day ceasefire in Gaza to exchange four Israeli hostages for some Palestinian prisoners. He made the announcement as efforts to defuse the more than year-long war resumed in Qatar with the directors of the CIA and Israel's Mossad intelligence agency taking part. There was no immediate comment from Israel or Hamas. A Palestinian official close to the mediation effort told Reuters that Hamas would listen to the new offers but remains determined that any agreement should end the war and get Israeli forces out of Gaza. Israel has said the war cannot end until Hamas has been wiped out as a military force and governing entity in the enclave. The U.S., Qatar and Egypt have been spearheading negotiations to end the war that erupted after Hamas fighters stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7 last year, killing 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages, by Israeli tallies. And stop the war and stop the bloodshed in Gaza. And now even in the north or in our north the south of Lebanon. And now the worry is spreading even to Iran. But Abbas' militant opponents – Hamas and Islamic Jihad – say the PA is serving Israel's agenda. Residents of Tubas said clashes between the militants and the Authority this month involved heavy machine guns and bombs in some of the worst violence they can remember. Tubas Governor Ahmed al-Asaad said the PA was maintaining law and order. "It is inevitable that outlaws will protest what the PA is doing, but we are doing things according to the Palestinian law and constitution and abiding by it." On Saturday, dozens of PA security men surrounded a building near Tubas where two militants were holed up. Abdel Majid al-Masri's son Obada was one of them. He threatened to blow himself up, a source familiar with the incident said. Abdel Majid was called to the scene to convince Obada to surrender. "Why didn't he want to surrender? He was saying that Palestinians are not supposed to shed Palestinian blood..." Al-Masri said his son agreed after receiving guarantees he would be held in Tubas rather than at another PA jail where he'd suffered mistreatment in the past. "The families of the wanted people are under immense pressure, we want a solution with the PA to either ensure the safety of our children, find a solution for them or to stop pursuing them and hunting them down and let the occupation only pursue them. It is difficult for us to have two sides looking for our children." :: Hebron, West Bank Islamic Jihad condemned the operation, saying the PA was trying to eliminate resistance to Israel and its methods were no different. :: February 7, 2024 The United States has said it wants post-war Gaza and the West Bank unified under a reformed and revitalized PA. But a September opinion poll showed 89% of Palestinians in the West Bank want Abbas to resign, and that Hamas has more support than Fatah there. Ghaith Al-Omari of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy said Palestinian security forces are just "really, really unpopular" in the northern West Bank. "The Palestinian Authority presents itself as the address for the day after in Gaza, however, many not only Israelis, but I when I talk to American officials, Arab officials, they will say if the PA cannot control the West Bank, how can we expect it to control Gaza, which is a much more complicated landscape? So the PA is trying to basically say, look, we are asserting ourselves..." :: File It highlights the precarious position of an authority formed in 1994 as a stepping stone to a state in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as its capital, a prospect that appears as far away as it ever did. :: June 2013 As well as unpopular, critics view the PA as ineffective – a reputation that has overshadowed U.S.-led diplomatic contacts over any future role it might play.1 week ago

More than a dozen people were killed, including children, according to a local hospital. It was where people displaced by the fighting were sheltering. This eyewitness says he heard the strike. He says the people coming out of the building were "all cut up, arms and legs separate." The Israeli military said it had hit a Hamas command and control center embedded in a former school. There had been hopes that the killing of Hamas' leader Yahya Sinwar last week might provide an opening to end the fighting. But Israel is pushing on with intensive operations in northern Gaza. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in the Middle East this week in hopes of reviving ceasefire talks. He was in Doha Thursday, and spoke at news conference with Qatar’s prime minister: "We had an opportunity today to talk about the way forward on the effort to bring the hostages home and to get a ceasefire. Partly this involves an assessment of exactly where Hamas stands in the wake of the death of (Hamas chief, Yahya) Sinwar. We talked about that. We talked about options to capitalize on this moment and the next steps to move the process forward. And I anticipate that our negotiators will be getting together in the coming days." As the war moves into its second year, the death toll from the Israeli campaign in Gaza is approaching 43,000. Al-Shannar said he had been waiting since early in the morning to secure bread for his family of 14 and that his children were hungry. He appealed to the world to help end the suffering in Gaza, as the war between Israel and Hamas moves into its second year with ceasefire talks apparently stalled. - 2:26Israel bombs historic Lebanese city as Blinken urges halt to warReuters VideosSTORY: Israeli air strikes pound Tyre, a historic Lebanese port city. Israel began to bomb roughly three hours after issuing an order online for residents to flee central areas of the UNESCO-listed city. Tens of thousands of people have fled Tyre in recent weeks. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in the Middle East on Wednesday (October 23) to push for a halt to fighting between Israel and militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah. But there was no respite for Tyre, usually a bustling hub for Lebanon's south - with fishermen, tourists, and even U.N. peacekeepers on a break from deployments near the border spending time there by the sea. And no let up either for besieged northern Gaza, which Palestinians were fleeing en masse on Wednesday. Health authorities reported at least 20 people killed in fresh Israeli strikes. Khouloud Abu Nada was among the many displaced with nowhere to go yet again. "It has been 18 days - they have implemented a siege on the north, it was like they put us in a prison, we could not leave." LINA ABU NADA: "We cannot take it anymore. We are being exterminated in Gaza - we are dying, and no one standing beside us." :: @mhmd.hsn.salami via Instagram In Lebanon, Israel's military said it had killed three Hezbollah commanders and some 70 fighters in the south in the past 48 hours, a day after confirming it had killed Hashem Safieddine, the militant group's heir apparent leader. Blinken, in Tel Aviv before departing for Riyadh, said it was time for Israel to capitalize on its military victories. It's the last major U.S. peace push before the Nov. 5 presidential election, which could upend U.S. policy in the region. "Now is the time to turn those successes into an enduring strategic success. And there really are two things left to do get the hostages home and bring the war to an end with an understanding of what will follow."
