Hungary's Orban proposes ceasefire to hurry Ukraine peace talks
Reuters Videos9 hours agoSTORY: In a surprise visit to Kyiv on Tuesday , Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban gave a clear message on how to end Russia's war in Ukraine. "I asked the president to think about whether we could reverse the order, and speed up peace talks with making a ceasefire first. A ceasefire connected to a deadline would give a chance to speed up peace talks. I explored this possibility with the president and I am grateful for his honest answers and negotiation.” Orban has the warmest relations of any EU leader with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The outspoken critic of Western military aid to Ukraine held talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy during his first trip to Kyiv in more than a decade. "We would like to make the relationship between the two countries better. We would like to make a broad bilateral agreement with Ukraine, similar to the ones we already made with our neighbours. We would be happy to take part in the modernisation of Ukraine's economy, we would like an ordered framework for this." He also said he valued Kyiv's push to promote Zelenskiy's vision of peace at an international summit in June. The Ukrainian president, who spoke before Orban, did not respond to those comments. Ties between the neighbors came under heavy strain after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Budapest has often opposed the European Union efforts to support Kyiv. Earlier this year it took EU leaders weeks to break Orban's veto to extend over 50 billion euros in new aid to the war-torn country. Under Orban, Hungary has repeatedly accused Ukraine of curbing the rights of roughly 150,000 ethnic Hungarians living in the far west of Ukraine. Ukraine denies this and says it is open to addressing any concerns. Kyiv is keen to secure Hungary's backing as it relies heavily on financial and military support from the 27-member EU, where unanimity is needed for many decisions.

- 0:41Ukraine applauded as EU membership talks beginReuters VideosSTORY: :: Ukraine is cheered as EU membership talks begin in a 'historic' moment for the country :: June 25, 2024 :: Luxembourg :: Olga Stefanishyna, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister :: "The Ukrainian constitution, meanwhile, reaffirms the European identity of Ukrainian people and irreversibility of Ukraine's European course. We firmly believe that the initiation of its session negotiations today mark a historic milestone of our relationship, but it's only a beginning of the longer way we will go through together. Thank you." The talks are meant to give the country a political boost in the midst of its war against Russia's invasion, although a long and tough road still lies ahead before it could join the bloc. The ceremony in Luxembourg will be more about symbolism than the nitty-gritty of negotiations, which will start in earnest only after the EU has screened reams of Ukrainian legislation to assess all the reforms needed to meet the bloc's standards. But by marking the start of talks with Ukraine, and with its neighbour Moldova later in the day, the EU is signaling that both countries are on a path away from Russian influence and towards greater integration with the West.1 week ago
- 1:25North Korean official criticizes US support for UkraineReuters VideosSTORY: A top North Korean military official on Monday criticized the US for increasing military aid to Ukraine, according to state media a show of support for Moscow in the ongoing Ukraine war. A recent pact between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, announced during Putin's visit to Pyongyang last week commits both countries to provide immediate military assistance in the case of aggression against either one of them potentially enabling arms trading and strengthening their anti-US alliance. Both Washington and Seoul are concerned about the prospect of increased military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang and have accused them of already violating international laws by trading arms for use against Ukraine. Russia and North Korea deny these claims. North Korea's Pak Jong Chon, the top official speaking in state media Monday warned of a potential strong response from Moscow if the US pushes Ukraine towards a "proxy war" against Russia, possibly leading to a "new world war." He referred to comments by the Pentagon last week that Ukrainian forces can use U.S.-supplied weapons to strike Russian forces anywhere across the border into Russia. In a joint statement released the same day by Seoul's foreign ministry officials from South Korea, the U.S., and Japan strongly condemned the deepening military ties between North Korea and Russia.1 week ago

- 2:01Ukraine captures Russian anti-drone 'barn' tankReuters VideosSTORY: This is what the Ukrainian army is calling a "barn" tank. It's a bizarre-looking Russian battlefield vehicle, captured by Kyiv's forces. And it seems to highlight how troops are trying to adapt to the constant threat of drone attacks. The vehicle, built from a ramshackle, rusted T-62 tank, was modified to have a boxy metal shell as its exterior, a cage at its rear and electronic warfare devices attached to it. That's according to soldiers who spoke to Reuters after it was captured this week. Its canopy appeared to be built to protect against drones, particularly cheaply produced First-Person-View ones. Those are strapped with a munition and flown to their target by a pilot watching on a screen. Dmytro is a Ukrainian soldier. “I don’t even know what it (‘barn’ tank) is made of. But the tracks are protected. A shell that hit it bent it a bit. But this protection is helpful it prevents shells from going under and it protects the tracks. It does give the crew an advantage for a certain, short period of time." Soldiers say the "barn" tank's main purpose was shuttling around food, ammunition and troops. Dmytro added that getting in and out of the vehicle, carrying equipment through its tiny hatch, was difficult. And that visibility was very limited and the stench inside overwhelming. Aerial drone footage shot by the Ukrainian military and published on June 17 showed the tank being captured in a wooded area along with a Russian crew. Kyiv's forces then planted a Ukrainian flag on top of it. Nearly 28 months since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, the use of drones by both sides has become ubiquitous on the battlefield - making it harder for both sides to advance or operate safely. The Ukrainians say the vehicle was captured near Klishchiivka - a village gripped by months of fighting near the Russian-occupied city of Bakhmut.2 weeks ago

- 1:31In talks with Putin, Kim vows 'full support' for Russia in UkraineAssociated Press VideosNorth Korean leader Kim Jong Un promised full support for Russia’s war in Ukraine before starting a one on one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukraine's football association said the Sonyachny stadium in Kharkiv, in eastern Ukraine, had been destroyed by Russian shells in 2022. In a central Munich square, Ukrainian refugees and supporters who had driven 25 hours from Ukraine looked at the blue and yellow seats, hours before their team were due to play their first Euro 2024 game against Romania in the city. - 2:20Majority of 90 countries at Ukraine peace summit sign declarationReuters VideosSTORY: The vast majority of more than 90 countries attending a Swiss summit on peace for Ukraine supported its final declaration, as it concluded on Sunday (June 14). Initiated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the two-day summit at the Swiss Alpine resort of Buergenstock aimed to find a consensus on how to end the war in Ukraine. "I am confident that together we will ensure the result. The first and the second peace summits should unite our joint work on the details of peace." Many Western leaders voiced condemnation of Russia's invasion and rejected President Vladimir Putin's demands for parts of Ukraine as a condition for peace. However, some countries that attended the summit did not put their name to the communique, including Mexico, Saudi Arabia and India. There was no clarity on whether future talks would involve Russia. Swiss president, Viola Amherd. "A lasting solution must involve both parties. Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, the discussions over the past two days have shown that there are different points of view. All the more important is our understanding that the path towards peace in Ukraine must be pursued on the basis of international law, and in particular, the United Nations Charter." Moscow, which was not invited, labeled the summit a waste of time. China was another notable absentee. The conference nevertheless underscored both the broad support Ukraine still enjoys from its allies but also the challenges for any lasting ceasefire. A draft of the final declaration seen by Reuters refers to Russia's invasion as a 'war', a label Moscow rejects. It calls for Ukraine's control over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and its Azov Sea ports to be restored and for Ukraine's territorial integrity to be respected. But in line with the conference's more modest stated aims, it omitted tougher issues of what a post-war settlement for Ukraine might look like and whether Ukraine could join the NATO alliance. The Kremlin did not rule out future talks with Kyiv, but said guarantees will be needed to ensure the credibility of any negotiations. Whether there will be a follow up to the summit, and where it would be held remained unclear.2 weeks ago
