- 2:08High-tech headset boosts sports viewing for the visually impairedReuters VideosSTORY: As the Paralympic Games begin, a new high-tech headset allows visually impaired fans to enjoy the action like never before. GFX: FUTURE OF HEALTH Developed by UK startup GiveVision, the headset aims to set new accessibility standards for sports and entertainment events. Here is Joanna Liddington, the head of operations at GiveVision. :: Worcester, England :: Joanna Liddington, Head of operations at GiveVision. "The person using the headset can really zoom in on what they want to see, they can manipulate the image to suit their sight loss. The key thing with this is for a lot of people with sight loss they need things to be enlarged and close by and quite bright. And this headset encompasses all of those things." Cisse tried the device during the 2024 Paris Olympics. "It was just beautiful. I really enjoyed to see the runners and I really enjoyed to see how people were like just supporting all the countries and wonderful to see that I can see face very clearly." The device stimulates photoreceptor cells in the eyes, enabling those with sight loss to have an enhanced visual experience. "Every type of sight loss is completely different. No two people's eyes are the exact same to each other. So what was really key when we developed the headset was to take into consideration what we can put there to allow each individual to play around with it as they want to. For example, a lot of people will be sensitive to light and so they're able to dim the headset." A 2023 study by a French association for the blind and visually impaired found that 73% of those with some impairment said that they no longer go to stadiums. The same study found that not being able to follow the match and needing to have someone as a guide or commentator were the main reasons why respondents did not go to sporting events. The World Health Organisation estimates that there are more than 2.2 billion people with some form of visual impairments globally.2 days ago
