Kry Ventures into Generative AI to Enhance Healthcare Services Swedish digital healthcare startup Kry has announced significant investments in generative AI, thereby pushing back its projected profitability to 2025. Nonetheless, the company remains profitable on a country level, excluding central costs. In 2023, pre-tax losses were halved to €78 million, while revenue surged to €188 million. Kry secured a €20 million convertible note from its existing investors, with the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan making the largest contribution. The investment in AI is aimed at reducing administrative workload for healthcare staff and integrating digital and physical care pathways. Kry's ultimate goal is to emerge as Europe's largest primary care provider, excluding public systems, and to cater to 10% of the population in its target markets by 2027. Currently operating 55 physical clinics, Kry is open to acquisitions in order to bolster its in-person healthcare offerings. Despite Sweden's established mammography screening program, 30% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed between screenings, known as interval cancers, which are more challenging to treat due to delayed detection. There is a shortage of breast radiologists in Sweden, with only 71 specialists available, leading to efforts to incorporate AI to assist in diagnosis. This master's thesis project supports this development by examining how radiologists interact with AI-generated visualizations and predictions to improve trust and integration into current workflows.

Last Thursday I talked about leading AI development and implementation in healthcare for the Next Generation AI Business Leaders Programme at AI Sweden. A couple of things that I lifted from our learnings over five years: 🤝 Work cross-functional with product, design, tech incl ai, clinical and regulatory competences. 🛠 Validate the biggest risks early and include value, feasibility, viability and usability risks – many you can validate without building ⌛ Think early on adoption and certification but timebox the effort before you know you have a valuable service 🔄 Work in iterations and integrate learning to adjust the aim   A final note is that with the current challenges within healthcare focus on problems and solutions that: 1️⃣ Free up time in healthcare 2️⃣ Improve patients lives 3️⃣ Improve medical outcomes (in that order👌)

As the #NHS moves rapidly to digital solutions, centred around the #NHSAPP as the single digital front door, it's important to understand the differences between solution types. Jussi Määttä thank you for a nice, simple explanation. Whilst #emeetandgreet, #patientengagementportals and #electronicpatientrecords (EPRs) are all high profile and being centrally funded, #carepathwaysolutions are fundamentally important to streamline patient care and improve #productivity whether around #perioperativecare or #longtermconditions management and #virtualwards. Even before we start talking about #AI..... So it's important to develop our digital solutions vocabulary. All this becomes even more important as we move towards a new 10 year plan for the NHS... Buddy Healthcare will be a key enabler for the #NHS to achieve #productivity and #transformation of #patientoutcomes and #patientexperience

What do providers want the most? I think everyone would agree that they want to treat and help patients. But how can they do that when they are overworked, burned out, and buried under mounds of documentation? What else do they desire......TIME. If you could unburden them from documentation, while giving them more accurate, complete, detailed notes, instantly, and in their preferred workflow preferences, would that not improve patient care? What would it mean to your providers to take away the note taking and typing, and give them coding suggestions? It would give them the opportunity to improve patient care, while you are giving them what they most desire.... and that is TIME! The simple is often the hardest! Quote of the day. You should read this! 👇 Great artikel by Erika Eliasson Ekberger in Breakit today. Investor communication that is clear, honest and consistent is key. But as she points out "the simple is often the hardest". I think this also applies not only to listed companies but there is a lot of it that applies also to private companies as they manage their relations with their cap table. To maintain trust with the shareholders over time, and be able to raise more funding for example when needed from existing shareholders, it can certainly help to be proactive, consistent and honest in the communication of how the business is performing, both the good and the bad at times. Suger coating, neglecting or putting the lid on is a boomerang that can really come back and hit you in the head. One interesting reflection though is setting the expectations-aspect. What is the rule of thumb and does it differ in listed vs private companies that for example are backed by VC? Reach for the stars and get to the moon-approach or never make statement that you cannot over-achieve on? In my experience there are very different cultures in VC backed vs listed in this area. A bit over a year ago, we opened our first Neko Health Centre in Stockholm, driven by the mission to build a proactive healthcare system focused on disease prevention. Since then, thousands have come to do a Neko Body Scan. Today, we want to share the data that we’ve gathered.  Here are the key findings: - Healthy majority – overall health maintained & optimized: For 78.5% of people scanned, our examinations showed no health issues or need for further examination.    - Medical treatment initiated: 14.1% of the people who underwent a Neko Body scan needed medical treatment and monitoring. This included diseases that were life-threatening or could cause serious injury, diseases of moderate severity, or mild conditions:     - Life-saving /avoidance of severe injury: 1% of all people that we scanned received a potentially life-saving intervention. These interventions addressed severe conditions such as cardiovascular diseases (e.g. aortic aneurysms, severe hypertension, and stenosis), severe metabolic diseases (e.g. severe diabetes, severe hyperlipidemia) and skin cancer (malignant melanomas). None of these people were aware of their condition prior to their visit. Notably 1 in 4 individuals (26%) who were diagnosed were under the age of 50.     - Significant health conditions: 6.6% of the people scanned had a moderate to severe health condition. Through detection of conditions such as heart diseases (e.g. non-rheumatic aortic valve disorder, hypertension, atrial fibrillation), type 2 diabetes, and skin cancer, timely interventions were made possible. Majority of the people (90%) were not aware of their condition or had any symptoms prior to the visit. 1 in 3 (28%) who were diagnosed with significant conditions were under the age of 50.     - Reversible conditions where primary prevention was initiated: 2.1% of the people showed early signs of health issues such as elevated blood pressure, increased blood sugar levels, abnormal heart rhythms, or pre-cancerous skin conditions. By successfully identifying these risks, we can now monitor and guide them towards preventive measures.     - Cleared with skin examinations: 2.8% of the people were cleared with a skin follow-up through short term monitoring with dermoscopies and excisions, according to medical guidelines.   - Undergoing further investigation: 1.5% of the people are still undergoing further investigation and the final diagnosis has yet to be determined.  - Cleared: 3.5% of the people were cleared through follow-up tests within our clinics, covered by Neko Health. After the control tests, no further examination was needed (e.g. ECG, control blood tests and BP). These follow-up tests were offered in order to minimize false positives and unnecessary burden to the healthcare system.   - Others: Lastly, 3.9% of the people referred were excluded from further analysis as they opted to follow-up at other clinics, cancellations, or no-shows.

As we move forward, we’re seeing a renewed focus on wellbeing and job satisfaction. Initiatives are underway to reduce overbooking and ensure that every healthcare worker can provide care without the fear of burnout. Together, we’re building a future where healthcare workers are celebrated, supported, and empowered to thrive. A future where every member of our healthcare family can look forward to a fulfilling career, filled with opportunities for growth and innovation. Let’s continue to champion a healthcare system that’s not only sustainable but also a source of national pride—a system where caring for those who care for us is our utmost priority.

On April 16, 2024, the Finnish government finalized its fiscal policy. Once again the healthcare sector had to take an enormous hit, setting the stage for an unprecedented healthcare staffing crisis. Here's how we are expertly building the foundation for a future disaster: 1. 🏥 Imagine an elderly care home with 20 residents now having one less staff member. This isn't just about numbers it's about increased workloads, higher turnover rates, and a declining interest in nursing and caregiving roles (something already very much present). Our healthcare workers who were already burning out will now need to handle even more work load. 2. ⏳ By 2030, nearly 26% of nurses, 31% of public health nurses, and a staggering 47% of middle directors in nursing will retire. We're not keeping up with the replacement pace, and this gap is widening every day. 3. 👵👴 Finland's elderly population is increasing year by year, a demographic reality that no budget cut or policy shift can alter. The demand for healthcare professionals is skyrocketing, yet our staffing ratios are moving in the opposite direction. No matter your political affiliation, religion, race, or background we will all grow old. Time does not discriminate. Are all patient-facing digital solutions similar? Not quite. I’ve often heard, "We already have a digital service for patients; we don't need another one." However, digital health solutions vary significantly in purpose and value. As discussed in a recent article (unfortunately, in Finnish), here’s a breakdown: 🔹 Patient Portals: These platforms serve the entire population, providing basic access to health records, appointments, and general communication, making them cost-effective but limited in functionality. 🔹 Digital Front Door Solutions: Designed for acute care, these handle initial consultations and automate triage to streamline the process, reducing wait times and improving efficiency, with moderate per-patient costs. 🔹 Care Pathway Management: This is where complex, ongoing treatments require specialized guidance, tailored support, and care coordination, resulting in a higher per-patient cost. Implementing these pathways is challenging, requiring clinical and technical expertise to adapt care processes to individual needs.
