As we approach the end of the year, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our community. Nordic Angels expands to Finland with Valtonen and Vesterbacka leading the way Nordic Angels, a prominent network of angel investors in the Nordic region, has appointed Kustaa Valtonen and Peter Vesterbacka as founding members of its new Finnish chapter. Valtonen is recognized for his leadership in the Helsinki-Tallinn tunnel project, while Vesterbacka, a former executive at Rovio Entertainment, played a key role in the global success of the Angry Birds brand. Their involvement marks a step towards strengthening Finland’s role within the broader Nordic startup ecosystem. Idag hade vi en dialog tillsammans med Stockholms Handelskammare om ägande i privata bolag, Sveriges konkurrenskraft och hur vi bättre kan samordna kapitalet. Vad är det som faktiskt gör Sverige unikt – och vad hotar vår position? Vad jag ville jag ha sagt: 1. Studenter äger sina patent. I Sverige bygger vi på individens drivkraft. Studenter vid våra universitet äger sina idéer och patent. Det är en grundbult för innovation och entreprenörskap som få länder matchar. https://lnkd.in/dPhwgH2t 2. Ekonomisk trygghet ger mod att misslyckas. I Sverige har vi ett samhälle som möjliggör ett ekonomiskt säkerhetsnät. Misslyckas du med ett bolag hamnar du inte på gatan. Denna trygghet gör att fler vågar starta företag, något som direkt stärker vår konkurrenskraft. Alla i Sverige är ekonomiskt oberoende- utmana gärna. 3. Hög tillit till system och medmänniskor. Vi litar på våra banker, våra myndigheter och varandra. Denna tillit är inte bara en kulturell fördel utan även en konkurrensfördel för att bygga långsiktiga företag och samarbeten. Men… vad händer nu? När globala innovationer som Sora (OpenAI:s nya chat video bot) och Apple AI släpps, så kan vi i Sverige inte använda dem fullt ut, på grund av EU-regleringar. Vi har en lång tradition av att skapa och använda ny teknik, men nu riskerar vi att hamna på efterkälken deluxe. Hur ska vi fortsätta vara konkurrenskraftiga om vi begränsas i vår tillgång till verktyg som formar framtidens näringsliv? Diskussion kring reglering, innovation och vår roll i ett globalt ekosystem vibrerar i Sthlm. Vad jag istället fick sagt: Att få dela med mig om en del av de lösningar vi tagit fram för att serva samtliga investerare i Norden på olika sätt. In 2023, while global VC took a 35% hit, Europe’s angel investor community soared to new heights. Record numbers of angels joined the scene, consolidating networks and creating the support systems startups need to thrive.  👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 📈 Membership in angel networks is up 16%, and investments per network have surged by 45%. 🌍 Smaller ecosystems are emerging as innovation hubs, proving it’s no longer just about big cities. 🤝 Consolidation is creating stronger networks, giving angels the scale to deliver capital, expertise, and connections where startups need them most. Thanks to Finansavisen for covering our expansion plans in Norway. Some key take aways from State of European Angels. Nordic Angels Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Norway improved its ranking amongst the European markets in attracting VC capital. It ranked one place up at 9th, ahead of Italy but behind Denmark, by attracting about 1.3B USD of VC funding in 2023 Norway is the third biggest VC market in Nordics. It has been neck to neck against Denmark in being the second biggest VC market in Nordics, attracting larger capital than Denmark both in 2021 and 22. However, Denmark took a narrow lead in 2023. Norwegian competitiveness is driven by culture, access to talent, focus on innovation, and regulations. The country is a powerhouse in sectors such as Energy, Transportation, and FoodTech; Oslo remains the VC hub with about 65% of national VC funding, but Bergen and Trondheim grew faster Norway has become heavily reliant on international investors for early-stage funding. After Iceland, it has the highest share in Nordics (at 56%) for the early-stage funding that comes from Non-Nordic Investors Norway is at risk of falling behind in deep tech, including AI, and is at risk of losing its place in global VC unless three key actions are taken 🇳🇴Domestic capital sitting in institutional investors is unlocked to support early-stage VC (as in the US). 📈Corporate VCs account for amongst highest share of VC capital invested (23% in Norway vs 17% in the UK, 15% US). This is a good sign, but more can be done to unlock private capital. 🤝Increasing collaboration amongst early-stage investors as the ecosystem is too small for investors to work in Silos. The cost of talent is lowered in Norway, which performs better than the Nordic leader Sweden in this regard. However, the recent decision to tax unrealized capital gains may make it harder for the country to attract and keep talent.
