Himeji wis the caipital o Himeji Prefectur (later Shikama Prefectur) syne 1871, but the prefectur wis merged intae Hyogo Prefectur in 1876. The ceety o Himeji wis municipalized on Aprile 1, 1889. Efter the 1923 Great Kantō yirdquauk, the Japanese govrenment reportedly conseidered flittin the naition's caipital frae Tokyo tae Himeji.
