Computer science is currently experiencing an educational renaissance in public schools. Following President Barack Obama’s 2016 final State of the Union address prioritizing computer science education, he launched a Computer Science for All initiative, calling on states and the nation’s school districts to design five-year plans to ensure that all students have access to computer science education. The president’s call, which addresses how computer science is driving innovation, is important for all students to learn, and makes an appeal to Congress to pass a bipartisan budget to expand educational opportunities in all schools (The White House, 2016). Having worked on the issue of broadening participation in computing and educational equity for over two decades or more, along with many other teachers and researchers across the country, we applaud the increased commitment to computer science education by the White House. Yet, at the same time, we urge a word of caution. Even with the call for “CS for All,” it could be too easy for computer science to scale but still remain a largely tracked and segregated subject. It could be too easy for courses to be introduced into the schools but still leave students without the necessary scaffolding and preparation they need.
