DIAMOND GUIDE

CARAT GRADING

diamond carat weight

Carat is a weight unit used to measure diamonds and gemstones. It was formally adopted in 1907 at the Fourth General Conference on Weights & Measures in France, and spread as the internationally recognized standard. Carat weight is a unit of mass equivalent to 0.2 grams. A 1 carat diamond weighs 0.2 grams (200 milligrams). Diamond pricing is affected by all 4Cs, so a smaller diamond of higher Clarity and Color, or a small superbly cut diamond, may be priced higher than a larger, lesser quality diamond.

AI CUT GRADING

4C Cut grading Sarine

Cut grading was revolutionized in 1992 with the market introduction of Sarine’s DiaMension®. It was the first software in the world to provide automated and computerized measurement of the diamond’s proportions – the most critical aspect affecting Cut grade. DiaMension® transformed how polished diamonds are assigned their Cut grade, enabling unparalleled levels of accuracy.

AI COLOR GRADING

In white diamonds, minor color differences, which are often imperceptible to the naked eye, can make a big difference in determining a diamond’s value or demand in the retail market. The way to overcome this is via the use of standardized reliable AI-based color grading that demonstrates consistent accuracy rates that surpass those achieved via manual color grading.

AI CLARITY GRADING

Sarine Clarity™ enables automated mapping of diamond inclusions and blemishes, that overcomes the inconsistencies of subjective human perception. Automated clarity grading enables diamond producers to sort diamonds into sub-categories according to pre-defined clarity grading criteria, so each diamond can be targeted to its ideal sales market.

LIGHT PERFORMANCE

diamond light performance scale

A diamond’s light performance is a measure of its interaction with light. Light performance is the most accurate and comprehensive way to determine a diamond’s visual appeal, and also its uniqueness – as no two diamonds have the same light return. Not only a descriptor of its beauty, did you know diamonds with high light performance grade can command a higher retail price? We talk about a diamond’s light performance using terms such as fire, sparkle, scintillation, and symmetry.

Sarine was the first to introduce AI-based grading for both color and clarity in 2017, marking a significant advancement in the diamond industry. In 2022, a new chapter unfolded with the introduction of the second generation of AI-based grading, Sarine Clarity-II™, and an updated version of the esteemed Sarine Color™ system.

Yes. AI and machine learning removes the subjectivity and human error associated with manual grading. Factors like fatigue, mood, and lighting can impact human graders, leading to inconsistencies. In contrast, AI-based systems provide uniformity and reliability in evaluating diamond characteristics such as color, clarity, and cut.

Yes, GCAL by Sarine, part of the Sarine group, provides LGD diamond grading at its newly launched lab in Surat, as well as at its established and renowned lab in New York. Sarine’s automated diamond grading process is poised to revolutionize the industry by providing more consistent and accurate, while also pioneering on-site grading. This enhances transparency and traceability, reduces costs, and allows for scalability to meet increasing market demands.

Achieving consistent and repeatable grading with the human eye is challenging, leading to notable variations between diamonds of the same grade or those graded at different labs. AI-based grading is consistent. Automated grading uses machine learning to assess the grading results of tens of thousands of diamonds to arrive confidently at its color and clarity grade.

This marks the inception of a new era characterized by unmatched precision and reliability. Suppliers can now provide diamond grading reports without sending diamonds to external labs. Retailers benefit from increased consumer trust and a competitive edge. Consumers enjoy the assurance of objective, accurate AI-based grading, leading to a more transparent and satisfying diamond purchase experience.

Sarine’s diamond report enhances the consumer experience by providing an interactive, digitalized approach to diamond purchasing. These reports can be integrated into online retail platforms and in-store displays, allowing customers to simply scan a QR code or go online and quickly access a 3D image of their gem and detailed information about its attributes and journey from mine to store, fostering transparency and trust. This comprehensive and engaging tool deepens the customer’s appreciation and emotional connection to the diamond, aligning with values of transparency and authenticity.

Sarine’s report helps diamond retailers by enhancing brand transparency and building consumer trust. With Sarine’s reports, retailers can offer customers convenient, engaging, and shareable information about the true quality and characteristics of their diamonds. This shift to objective, accurate grading eliminates the subjectivity of traditional methods, assuring customers of their purchases. By delivering a high level of verifiable transparency, Sarine’s reports foster customer satisfaction, loyalty, and confidence, ultimately driving sales and strengthening the retailer’s brand reputation and differentiation in a competitive market.

Sarine’s Light™ Performance technology offers an advanced and objective approach to measuring a diamond’s interaction with light, providing a comprehensive analysis of its visual beauty beyond the 4Cs. Unlike traditional methods that rely solely on geometry, Sarine Light™ evaluates four critical parameters: Brilliance, Sparkle, Fire, and Light Symmetry. This results in a more detailed and precise grading report, helping retailers offer consumers diamonds that truly stand out in visual appeal.
