श्यामः, पुं, (श्यै + मक् ।) प्रयागस्य वटः । (यथा रघुः । १३ । ५३ । “त्वया पुरस्तादुपयाचितो यः सोऽयं वटः श्याम इति प्रतीतः । राशिर्मणीनामिव गारुडानां सपद्मरागः फलितो विभाति ॥”) मेघः । वृद्धदारकः । कोकिलः । कृष्णवर्णः । हरिद्वर्णः । इति मेदिनी ॥ धुस्तूरः । पीलु- वृक्षः । श्यामाकः । इति राजनिर्घण्टः ॥ दम- नकवृक्षः । गन्धतृणम् । इति विश्वः ॥ * ॥ श्यामवस्तूनि यथा, -- कृष्णानि केशवः सीरिचीरं चन्द्राङ्कराहवः । विन्ध्याञ्जनाद्रिवृक्षाहिवनभैरवराक्षसाः ॥ शिवकण्ठघनद्वैपायनरामधनञ्जयाः । शनिर्द्रुपदजा काली कलिकोलयमासुराः ॥ केशकज्ज्वलकस्तूरीराजपट्टविदूरजम् । विषकोषकुहूशस्त्रागुरुपापतमोनिशाः ॥ मसीपङ्कमदाम्भोधियमुनाधूमकोकिलाः । गोलाङ्गुलास्यगुञ्जास्ये कण्ठः खञ्जनकेकिनोः ॥ शवलं तालतापिञ्जतिलेन्दीवरवल्लयः । रसविद्भूतशृङ्गारौ कटाक्षोऽलिः कणीनिका ॥ नीली जम्बूफलं मुस्ता काककृत्याकुकीर्त्तयः । भिन्नश्छाया गजाङ्गारखलान्तःकरणादयः ॥” इति कविकल्पलतायां २ श्लेषस्तवके ४ कुसुमम् ॥

B. Description: Big mountain (mahāgiri) 6. 12. 17; all the seven mountains of the Śākadvīpa are described as adorned with jewels and mines of precious stones (tathaiva parvatā rājan saptātra maṇibhūṣitāḥ/ratnākarāḥ) 6. 12. 13.

Characteristic: Owing to the existence of Śyāma (black) mountain in Śākadvīpa the people there are black in colour; the reason for the black colour of the mountain as told by Saṁjaya to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, is that god Kṛṣṇa lives on that mountain and the colour of the mountain has turned black due to Kṛṣṇa's colour (śyāmo nāma mahāgiriḥ/yataḥ śyāmatvam āpannāḥ prajā janapadeśvara//…śyāmo yasmāt pravṛtto vai tat te vakṣyāmi bhārata/āste 'tra bhagavān kṛṣṇas tatkāntyā śyāmatāṁ gataḥ//) 6. 12. 17, 20.
