The word of the day: disruption. First of all, is disruption a positive or a negative thing? Disrupt comes from the Latin disrumpere, which is formed by combining dis- ("apart") and rumpere ("to break"). So, the word is associated with non-systematic ending the old ways, but says nothing about any new ways enforced instead. Which new ways do the disruptors take? What we see are finished products, usually following a big bang reveal. So we are unable to scrutinize any "ways" of how those products are designed and developed, apart from what we are being told in commercial presentations or what we witness by looking at the finished black box product. So, we resort to "learning by experience". The hardest, yet the most effective way to learn. There are no better ways to learn things that from your own bad and bitter experiences. You get valuable lessons for life. And yes, these lessons we got plenty in recent history. These were exactly the reason why we opted to front load engineering thinking into inherently robust, safe and secure development processes. This is why we worked hard on standards. This is why we established education and certification programs. This is why we opted for sustainability as opposed to one way tickets to Gambletown. What do you think about disruption?
