Advances in interface science over the last 20 years have demonstrated the use of molecular nanol... more Advances in interface science over the last 20 years have demonstrated the use of molecular nanolayers (MNLs) at inorganic interfaces to access emergent phenomena and enhance a variety of interfacial properties. Here, we capture important aspects of how a MNL can induce multifold enhancements and tune multiple interfacial properties, including chemical stability, fracture energy, thermal and electrical transport, and electronic structure. Key challenges that need to be addressed for the maturation of this emerging field are described and discussed. MNL-induced interfacial engineering has opened up attractive opportunities for designing organic–inorganic hybrid nanomaterials with high interface fractions, where properties are determined predominantly by MNL-induced interfacial effects for applications.

The sequence of reactions and morphological changes during the calcination of lead magnesium niob... more The sequence of reactions and morphological changes during the calcination of lead magnesium niobate titanate solid solution (PMNT) from a variety of reactant mixtures were studied. As predicted, the formation of the perovskite phase occurs with an expansion of the compact of the mixture and is accompanied by drastic changes in the microstructure. Reactive calcining of the mix to the point of maximum expansion (750°-800°C) results in ultrafine sinteractive powder and this facilitates the fabrication of dense, high performance PMNT ceramics at temperatures as low as 1150°C.

In this paper we report on the scintillation properties of cerium doped strontium—and barium hafn... more In this paper we report on the scintillation properties of cerium doped strontium—and barium hafnate. Radiolumi- nescence, pulse height, scintillation decay and timing spectra are presented. Radioluminescence spectra of SrHfO :Ce and BaHfO :Ce consist of a broad band due to Ce emission peaking at 410 nm and 400 nm, respectively. The light yield of BaHfO :Ce and SrHfO :Ce is approximately 40 000 photons/MeV when compared to a crystal of BGO. The principal decay time constant for SrHfO :Ce and BaHfO :Ce is 42 and 25 ns, respectively. A timing resolution of 276 ps (FWHM) was obtained with transparent optical ceramic of SrHfO :Ce . An ultrasonic color Doppler imaging system, and particularly a filtering method for removing a cl... more An ultrasonic color Doppler imaging system, and particularly a filtering method for removing a clutter signal from an ultrasonic image is provided. A modified infinite impulse response (IIR) filter to which a moving target indicator (MTI) principle is applied, can sufficiently suppress an undesired transient phenomenon shown in a conventional general IIR filter, and realize a steep characteristic curve which is the same as that of the conventional IIR filter, using a small order. Thus, a frame rate of the image system can be improved and a real-time processing is possible. However, first three signals output from such a filter do not represent a characteristic of a filter accurately. Thus, first three kinds of data which cause an inaccuracy to a filter characteristic are removed from a filter processing, to render an accuracy in realization of a modified IIR filter.

In this program, the effort is geared towards developing advanced mixed-metal oxide sorbents for ... more In this program, the effort is geared towards developing advanced mixed-metal oxide sorbents for desulfurization in moving-bed systems in the temperature rang 343-538{degrees}C (650-1000{degrees}F) where technical viability and process efficiency result in lower overall process costs. In addition a cost assessment and a market plan for large-scale fabrication of sorbents will be developed. As an optional task, a long-term bench-scale testing of the best moving-bed sorbent formulation will conducted. The sorbents must have chemical characteristics that permit cyclic desulfurization and regeneration over many cycles without a drastic loss of activity. The sorbents must be capable of reducing the hydrogen sulfide level in the fuel gas to less than 20 ppm in the specified temperature range and pressures in the range of 1 to 20 atmospheres.
