Honestly, I usually love Freida McFadden's books, but they do tend to follow a similar pattern with the same type of plot twists. I've read seven of her thrillers now, and they’re starting to feel a bit repetitive. I finished this one last night, and like with her other books, it was a little predictable. I had two theories, and I ended up guessing the twist by Chapter 34.One thing that always bugs me in her books is that the main characters never seem to have any common sense. They all come across as clueless or “innocent” to the point where they avoid doing the smart thing. Instead, they try to run or solve things on their own, which just gets frustrating. And in typical McFadden style, the "good guys" often turn out to be the villains—so keep that in mind! Still, it’s a good read overall.

I thought I had it this time. I SWEAR I HAD IT THIS TIME. But, also, in the deep corner of my mind, I knew it wouldn't be this easy. Frieda wouldn't make it this easy. This is a trap. "It's a trap!"

I will admit the story was dull. It wasn't bland enough to put down, but I still genuinely enjoyed it. However, it could have been better. I wish there had been more character development, but I enjoyed how unorthodox the writing style was. Sydney's inner monologue was similar to my own (it's goofy and dumb, and I can relate to it in my own way, regardless of the readers who think Sydney is stupid). The writing was very relaxed and set in what I believe is a modern thought process.

I liked the dual POV because Tom's past and Sydney's present moved toward each other until they met in the middle, and everything started to make sense (sort of).

3.75 stars for the writing style (that I related to personally), plot twist, and dual POV (past and present meeting in the middle). It would have been an actual four-star rating if there had been more character development.

I CAN NOT believe Tom went back with Daisy in the end. I was really hoping for some character development on his part, but I also understand the Bonnie and Clyde vibe going on between them. The only character development I saw was with Jake because he realized how he prioritized work over his relationship with Sydney. I don't know how I feel about them being back together, but I am glad he grew in that department, whether with her or someone else.

I really wasn't expecting Daisy to still be alive. I truly believed Randy was Slug because we were never given Slug's real name (from what I can remember), and he had bought that ant farm (when Slug was obsessed with bugs), but of course, Frieda wouldn't make it that easy for us. She wrote Daisy and Slug from a perspective where we believed them to be a certain way when they turned out to be the opposite (Daisy being sweet and innocent when she turned out to be a total psychopath and Slug being a perv but NOT a psychopath).

Also, Kevin was a completely pointless character. I understand him being an example of the bad dates she had been on, but other than that, his following her around and stalking her was pointless. Nothing came of it except for Tom killing him for her at the end of the book.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. It took a little bit to get into, but the dual POV definitely helped in that department (his past was more interesting than her blabbing about bad dates).

This is my first Freida McFadden read and i thoroughly enjoyed this. The first chapter got me hooked and then the rest was just history. You think you got the problem figured out but it was just twists after twists. The MFC Sydney at times was a little annoying to me at times but I get where she’s coming from, in her early thirties and wanting to find the one. But overall, the pace and the story itself was really good: the fact that this was a duo pov too was interesting because you think you know everything when you read from their perspective. That’s where the twists come in at odd angles. You don’t know until it’s revealed. I am anticipating the authors other titles now, any recommendations?

This story starts with Sydney going on what could be called the worst first date of all time. The guy she met on a popular dating app looks nothing like his profile photo, he makes her split the bill, pressures her to drink, and then answers a call from his mother on their date. And then he's aggressive when Sydney doesn't want to kiss him, or go on another date.

But a mystery man comes to her rescue but then disappears back off into the night. Until weeks later, she's on another date and runs into her mystery man again. Things take a different turn and they start dating. Until certain pink flags start popping up...

So Sydney's character drove me a little crazy. She's 34 years old and it seems like her whole life revolves around dating. Yes, that could be how the story is written and we just don't learn more about her. But I think the other thing that drove me nuts about Sydney is that I know Sydney's in real life, and I immediately thought of these people and how much their behavior drives me nuts. Just the sort of laser focus on dating and weddings and having kids and it's like everything else barely exists. *As a caveat, you should do exactly what you want in life, but sometimes I feel like people sort of miss the forest for the trees when they do this*.

Tom is the other POV we see in this story and we're seeing his past: from his first love, Daisy, to his father's death, to the mysterious happenings in his hometown.

I know Freida McFadden is known for her big twists and I'd say this one was done quite well. I had suspected it to some extent just because some things were too obvious; kind of like in CSI when they aggressively interview the first person 10 minutes in; you know it CAN'T be them since there's another 40 minutes of the show left.

I would definitely recommend this story if you're looking for a popcorn thriller that's an easy read, and fast paced. There isn't a massive amount of character development, but the story moves quickly and this one is a quick read that will leave you wondering what the hell just happened.

I’m enjoying her books and liked this one. My only complaint is that it is pretty formulaic as to a quick aha wrap up at the end. All that was missing was maniacal laughter. Seriously it is a good narrative but I kinda rolled my eyes a little at the ending as to plausibility and almost as if it had to get done by a deadline. Nevertheless she’s a good writer and it was entertaining.

I read this book in a day because I could not put it down! I'm usually able to figure out the ending to a book early on, and I thought I had this one figured out but boy, was I wrong! McFadden has crafted a thrilling, page turner with this book. The characters, are well formed, and I liked the writing style of going between past and present day. This was my first Freda McFadden book and it absolutely will not be my last!!

I started with Never lie from the author and went on to the next , the boyfriend. It was an amazing book for any one who enjoys a twist even at the last minute, even when you think you have figured it all out, it comes when you least expect it. But the book grounds us in a reality from how different characters react finally according to my pov. Perhaps an optimistic reader would have expected 'the boyfriend' to finally find happiness, I mean he does in his own way, I think, but this is also why I think the book ground us in a reality that says there are some things in life, some bonds for better or worst we can't easily get rid of and we all are not capable of overcoming it. Some of us just dive more into the depths.

The Boyfriend—now this is a book packed with surprises! What starts as a light, slow-burnish rom-com quickly takes a dark, bloody turn. Sydney Shaw, like many single women in New York, is no stranger to dating disasters—she’s met men who lie on their profiles, men who disappear when the bill arrives, and even the type who can’t stop talking about their mothers. But finally, she’s hit the jackpot with her new boyfriend, a charming, handsome doctor. Sydney is completely swept off her feet.

Then, the brutal murder of a young woman—the latest in a string of coastal killings—shocks the city. A mysterious man, known for dating women only to murder them, is the prime suspect. Sydney should feel safe with her dream boyfriend, yet suspicions begin to grow. What if he’s not as perfect as he seems? As blood-soaked revelations keep coming, tension escalates, and Sydney realizes someone may be watching her every move. 👀 She must uncover the truth before it’s too late—or she might be the killer’s next victim. The suspense builds until an absolutely jaw-dropping ending that left me stunned!

This book is pretty much perfect for spooky season—spooky, bloody, and guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat!
