He moves to the country to live with his ailing grandfather and faithful blue heeler Fudge, and as part of his parole begins a new job as a labourer. Bullied and provoked by his antagonistic boss, John escapes into the study of his family's ancestral history and the restoration of an old wooden sail boat.
