Thousands of loyal patriots gave up their lives upon the battlefield and left widows and orphans to the tender mercies of charity. The boy of Shiloh, too young to carry a musket, but too patriotic to remain at home, entered the service as a drummer. With patriotic fervor he beat his drum and led the brave boys into battle. A stray bullet finally silenced the drum and the drummer. His last dying thought was of his mother and her teachings. Hardened men, who had seen death every minute of the day. and who faced death all the time, gathered about the little crumpled form and with tears streaming down their cheeks listened to the prayers of the dying drummer boy of Shiloh.
