Jack is the favored one, and soon they are married, which makes Tom a life-long enemy of Jack. A year after their marriage, Jack, in an intoxicated state, strikes and deserts his wife. Tom hears of this, and manages to send her money, unknown to her. Months after Tom and Jack are brought face to face on a barren trail, Tom is about to shoot Jack, but seeing his condition decides to let him live. As Tom is helping Jack across a ravine his strength fails him and he falls to his death. Tom apprises Nell of this, and asks her to marry him. She accepts.
