Lawrence Joseph Bader, the name might ring some bells. This is considered "one of the most baffling amnesia disappearances on record" and "a weird story forever unanswered," the story of a former ordinary salesman, Lawrence Joseph Bader, remains a lifelong mystery.
Now On May 15th, 1957, Lawrence told his wife, Mary Lou, that he needed to go to Cleveland for a business trip. After that, he was planning on going on a fishing trip. And as such, he might be home late. Mary Lou, still pregnant with their fourth child, suggested that he come straight back home after the trip. And Lawrence's reply was: "Maybe I will, maybe I won't." He left right after.
So, Lawrence took his car and drove to Cleveland. He paid several unpaid bills, including an instalment premium for his life insurance policy, and cashed a check for $400. Then, he made his way to Eddie's Boat House, a marina on the Rocky River that flows into Lake Erie, where you can rent boats. It was late in the afternoon when Lawrence Cotleur (yes, Bader's namesake), the owner, gave him a storm warning. Lawrence, hard-headed, did not appear to care. He made a $15 down payment and requested that the boat have lights. Even though Cotleur said it would not get dark for several hours, he insisted. Cotleur saw that Lawrence was carrying a suitcase.
Then, Lawrence launched the motorboat, which had oars, and started paddling through the water. The Coast Guard on duty noticed him and said the same thing Cotleur said about the weather, telling him it wouldn't be safe when the storm hit.
The last time anyone engaged with a man named Lawrence Bader was probably then.
John Fritz Johnson or Lawrence Joseph Bader passed away on September 16th, 1966, due to his tumour returning. He was working as a bartender again at the time after losing his TV gig. He never acknowledged himself as Lawrence Joseph Bader, either.
