    Forests

Join The Children’s Hour as we venture into the enchanting world of forests. Hosted by Katie Stone, along with the inquisitive Kids Crew and special guest Dr. Lisa Markovchik, an ecologist from WildEarth Guardians, this episode delves deep into the vital role forests play in sustaining life on Earth. Find the full episode page with the learning guide at https://childrenshour.org/forests Forests are more than just a collection of trees; they are dynamic ecosystems teeming with life and intricate relationships. By understanding the science and magic of forests, we can appreciate their value and the importance of conserving them for future generations. Step into the woods with us! Dr. Markovchick explains how forests are the lungs of the planet, and describes the important role they play in capturing carbon, and creating oxygen. By capturing carbon, forests help maintain the delicate balance in our atmosphere to sustain life on Earth. We also learn how the trees in a forest use complex mycorrhizal networks to help communicate with one another, and so much more. The mushrooms we see in the forest are just the fruiting bodies of these beings which help decompose the forest debris, and deliver chemicals necessary to keep trees healthy. You can learn a lot more about forests in our Forests Learning Guide at ChildrensHour.org This episode was produced by Katie Stone, our Executive Producer and our Senior Producer, Christina Stella, and our intern Thaniel Lentz, with live engineering by Chad Scheer. Our Learn-Along Guide was written by Jonathan Dunski, with help from Lorraine Archibald. Many thanks to Dr. Lisa Markovchick for providing so many additional resources for us to share with our listeners. Squid

This time on The Children's Hour, we explore one of the ocean's most abundant, and widely distributed animals: squid. The Kids Crew and Katie Stone meet Dr. Sarah McAnulty, a biologist and squid scientist who helps us understand these amazing creatures. Squid are in the cephalopod family with octopus, cuttlefish, and nautilus. This ancient family of marine invertebrates pre-date trees on Earth, and can be found in all oceans, at all depths. Find out how they fit into the fabric of life. The full episode post with the Learning Guide can be found at https://childrenshour.org/squid Squid are bioluminescent, like fireflies and some cave creatures we have learned about on The Children's Hour. The Colossal Squid is the largest of all squid and can eat a whale! They also have bioluminescent eyes that are the size of footballs. While we might have our current stories about aliens and spaceships in modern movies, squid are about as alien to most of us as any extra terrestrial. Mythology around cephalopods date back centuries. Dr. McAnulty explains how the stories of the "Kracken" came to be, and why they are not completely untrue! We also learn about Skype A Scientist, the organization that provides free scientific experts to any group on any topic. A science communicateor, Dr. McAnulty founded Skype A Scientist to increase direct conversations between the scientific community and the public. Skype a Scientist will provide free scientific experts on any topic to any group, organization, classroom, or wherever people want to learn more about science.  The choices we make when we eat seafood can help save endangered marine life. Dr. McAnulty discussed using the Monterey Bay Aquarium's guides to finding sustainable seafood. Find the guide and other tips at their website. The Children's Hour is written and produced by Katie Stone, with production support from Gus Tafoya and Sean Lovelace. This episode was recorded at Outpost Performance Space and was engineered by Chad Scheer. Thaniel Lentz is our intern. Bears

Bear with us this time on The Children's Hour as we learn about bears from the legendary Dr. Lynn Rogers from the North American Bear Center. Find out how bears fit into our ecology, where and how they live, and how Dr. Rogers overcame his fear of bears to study wild bears. Find the full episode page with links, photos, and more at https://childrenshour.org/bears Get ready to explore the fascinating world of bears with The Children's Hour! In this episode, host Katie Stone and the Kids Crew welcome Dr. Lynn Rogers, a renowned biologist often called the “Jane Goodall of bears.” The founder of the North American Bear Center, Dr. Rogers has dedicated his career to studying black bears and shares surprising insights into bear behavior and ecology. You’ll learn how bears communicate, what they like to eat, and why they’re not as scary as we might think.  This episode introduces you to all eight species of bears found around the world. Dr. Rogers guides us through each bear type and its unique habitat. In North America, black bears, grizzly bears, and polar bears inhabit diverse environments, from forests to the icy Arctic. South America is home to the spectacled bear, the continent’s only native bear. Asia hosts four species: the moon bear, sun bear, sloth bear, and panda bear, each with special adaptations for their habitats, from bamboo forests to dense jungles. With Dr. Rogers as our guide, we uncover fascinating details about how each species has evolved to thrive in its own region. Dr. Rogers also shares his personal experiences working with bears. He explains how his research approach changed over time, focusing on building trust with the animals rather than using tranquilizers and collars. This approach allowed him to observe their natural behaviors up close, revealing bears to be intelligent, even gentle creatures. With questions from the Kids Crew and practical tips on what to do if you encounter a bear in the wild, this episode will deepen your respect for these incredible animals and their role in nature. This episode of The Children's Hour was written and produced by Katie Stone, with support from Dan Krakor, Jackie Fulton, and intern Thaniel Lentz. Special thanks to Dr. Lynn Rogers from the North American Bear Center in Ely, Minnesota, for sharing his expertise with us. Graphic Novels

This time on The Children’s Hour, the Kids Crew explores graphic novels. These modern day comic books can help kids become better readers, while keeping them engaged and learning. Dr. Lee Francis IV has a publishing house featuring graphic novels for all ages written by Native authors and illustrators. We also meet a science illustrator whose books help kids understand complex scientific topics. Plus we have book reviews! Find the full episode post at https://childrenshour.org/graphic-novels What kind of books do you like to read? If you enjoy books with illustrations, you might be a fan of graphic novels. Dr. Lee Francis, the Chief Indigenerd at the Indigenous Imagination Workshop writes and publishes graphic novels himself, and he teaches us what a graphic novel is, how they are created, and what topics they might cover. The Kids Crew are surprised to learn that graphic novels can also be nonfiction. For indigenous authors, graphic novels are a new form of storytelling to share traditional and historic stories to new generations of readers. We then meet Rachel Ignotofsky. She’s a science illustrator and author of many books for kids and adults. Her science series for kids uses graphics to illustrate a wide range of topics. These graphics help children and adults visualize the data and facts the books are teaching, and are beautiful at the same time. Thorfin brings us a review of a book published by Lee Francis called Saga Sky by Roy Boney. This graphic novel gets high marks from Thorfin. We also hear Max’s review of the graphic novel by RL Stine called The Graveyard Club. While these are a little scary, these books help tell spooky stories with compelling illustrations. We want to know: do you like graphic novels? Send us an email, or leave us a voicemail and let us know what you’re reading these days. We want to know: do you like graphic novels? Grateful For Grandparents

This week on The Children's Hour, it's the season of gratitude, and we're grateful for some of the most important people in our lives: our grandparents. The Kids have messages and stories to share for and about their own grandparents. We'll also hear kids from Jimmy Carter Middle School telling stories about grandparent love and magic in action.
