Halfway between South America and New Zealand is a small piece of volcanic, British territory; Pitcairn. It has one shop open for a few hours a day, it’s accessible only by boat, it was born out of Naval mutiny in the 18th Century, it’s home to around 45 British subjects...and an almighty scandal. Struggling with the colonial lens
8 Oct
I'm struggling with this podcast. The colonial bias is strong. The story of Pitcairn, and indeed the British and French in the Pacific, is one of brutality and inhumanity. So far, this podcast glosses over that and organises silence around it. The British cop is justifying statutory rape because it was a relationship that is mind-blowing in its thoughtlessness and ignorance. I’ll keep trying, but I’d rather hear a Uri of the locals tell this story.
