This podcast is produced as part of the traveling American art exhibition (Un)Settled: The Landscape in American Art. Created by the American South Consortium formed by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art as part of the Art Bridges Cohort Program, in partnership with the Columbia Museum of Art, Mobile Museum of Art, and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.

    The (Un)Settled Podcast Episode 5: Alex Harris

    In today’s episode, Stan Hackney, the curator of art and audience engagement at the Mobile Museum of Art, returns to discuss Un(Settled) and the inclusion of Alex Harris’s photograph Longleaf Pines, Knoll Park, Fairhope. Later, documentary photographer Alex Harris joins series host Drew Baron to explore the art of documentary photography and his work in Mobile, featured in the book Why We Are Here: Mobile and the Spirit of a Southern City, co-written with renowned naturalist E.O. Wilson.     The (Un)Settled Podcast Episode 3: Bill Harris

    In today's episode, the Columbia Museum of Art's Curator of Education Glenna Barlow talks about the inclusion of 3 pieces of Catawba pottery in (Un)Settled is creating new context for some beloved museum acquisitions. Then Catawba potter Bill Harris shares memories of his grandmother, Georgia Harris, whose work Bowl with Effigy Heads is featured in the exhibition. Bill Harris is a potter and teacher residing in South Carolina. Harris served as the elected chief of the Catawba Nation from 2011 to 2023. In 2016 Harris was honored as a recipient of the Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage award. He continues to work in the tradition of Catawba pottery taught to him by his grandmother and shares this knowledge by "teaching Georgia" to his students.     The (Un)Settled Podcast Episode 2: Dan Friday

    In today's episode, the Wadsworth's Krieble Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture Erin Monroe returns to talk about material culture in the exhibition and why the inclusion of Dan Friday's glass piece, Aunt Fran's Basket, was so special. Then Friday joins host Drew Baron for an interview discussing his work, heritage, and the world of glass art. Friday has worked with some of the biggest names in the medium — Paul Marioni, Preston Singletary, and since 2000, he has worked at Dale Chihuly’s renowned studio, The Boathouse. He's taught at the University of Washington, Pilchuck Glass School, and the Haystack Craft Center in Maine. Friday was also featured as a contestant on season three of Blown Away, Netflix's hit glass art competition show. His work fuses glass with inspiration from his Coast Salish cultural heritage, utilizing forms such as bears, salmon, totems, and baskets. The variety of media and makers helps to redefine whose view is considered and expands on landscape’s relevance and resonance in art. In today's episode, host Drew Baron, interviews the collaborators of the American South Consortium to learn more about how this partnership started before taking a deep dive into the themes and inspiration for the exhibition. Featuring interviews with Erin Monroe, Laura Leonard, Glenna Barlow, Michael Neumeister, Margaret Lynn Ausfeld, Emily Stuart Thomas, John Carfagno, and Stan Hackney. This is one in a series of American art exhibitions created through a multi-year, multi-institutional partnership formed by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art as part of the Art Bridges Cohort Program.
