Over The Top Under The Radar
Gary and Carys are sick and tired of poorly researched news stories that are over-reported and go way over the top! But on the other hand, they wanna show some love to let those important new stories that slip under the radar get their well-deserved moment in the sun, no pun intended! Join Gary Younge and Carys Afoko every week on Over The Top Under The Radar, where they'll discuss the news stories that are over the top and under the radar. It can be anything from Voter ID to Cowboy Carter, Welsh Steel and Garfield the Cat! But one thing is for sure: expect scrutiny, real talk, and the odd special guest joining the conversation. Insightful and compassionate

Really insightful and informative podcast. Full of genuine discussion of ideas for improving the lives of underprivileged people rather than performative debate, and all this whilst incorporating elements of fun and context for newcomers to an issue
Thoughtful exploration of current news topics

These two presenters calmly discuss polarising issues and thoughtful way. Oddly (for me) they frequently explore the reasons they think people with different opinions to them have formed those opinions (I frequently fall into that category, and it’s good for me to hear). I would recommend this podcast to anyone who has fallen the habit of not listening to others properly, or of expecting any debate on complex issues to be killed off by sound bites.
Outstanding

Plain English, top drawer chat, warm, funny and hugely insightful. Really grateful to get this in my ears each week. Moved me to leave my first ever podcast review on very much not my first rodeo.
Catch up Nov 8th/15th blimey you’ve been busy

Education, education, education Nov 8th Inspiring re US election- I realise only half the adult population voted in the election- neither republican nor democ showing an interest in enfranchising America - we need NEW stories about American states- the states of America- should America be on the curriculum (+ mobile phones and their dark supply chains so we understand how they’re produced and the mediation that produces them instead of letting everyone think they’re just magic. 15th Nov moving away from an individualistic approach to everything (re journalistic commentary but it applies to our relationship to these common problems) to understanding culture is a great thought - when we think of the summer riots we need to integrate economic criticism with neighbourhood + work/opportunity facts in stories (ask questions about actual jobs/quality of jobs/opps all the time) ie that many people because of the ‘way’ they’re allowed access into the economy through the enormous contracted out ‘employers’ need access to real stories about localising the economy history, how jobs, skills, opps should be conversations across the neighbourhood and lifespan. America needs localising Britain needs localising - I think there’s a missing local connection so life experience of work/life/health important
