Brown University's MFA acting and directing programs, a program offered in partnership with Trinity Repertory Company, have been put on indefinite pause.
"While there may come a time in which we create and implement a new academic model for the programs, that will not come in the short term," reads a statement posted to Brown's website last month.
The Rhode Island institutions had put the program on hold in 2023, saying that their "current training model needed to be re-examined to adapt to changing conditions." According to the statement, it was determined since that a fix was not available any time soon.
The programs will continue to operate through June 2026, allowing all current students to finish their programs. The programs currently have two classes of students enrolled, one of which will graduate this spring.
The move does not, however, mean the end of the relationship between Brown and Trinity Rep. According to the statement, Brown Arts Institute Faculty Director Sydney Skybetter will be leading a new working group to re-envision their professional performing arts training. That group will also include Trinity Rep leaders, industry professionals, Brown faculty, Brown alumni, and alumni of the Brown/Trinity MFA programs.
