Used to be super easy to use, just tap to pay. Now, even when the phone is already unlocked, I need to tap, *then* it asks again for my pin, then it works. This is not only really annoying, but often causes the payment terminal to break and require a reset. Honestly one of the worst software updates I've ever seen. If they wanted to make it more secure, make it so that opening the wallet requires the pin BEFORE you try to tap at the terminal, not AFTER you tap. Honestly unbelievable.

The new forced authentication is terrible. As your other replies state, you are indeed providing a consistent purchasing experience, but it is one that is terrible and not user friendly in any way. It's not good enough for me to unlock my phone (which I do by pin), I have to open the app and enter my pin again! If I don't the transaction gets cancelled and I have to use my card. Very much a pain and what used to be a breeze is now nothing but frustrating.

Edit: Yes. We all understand "why" you've done this. It's still annoying as hell, causes stress when trying to pay at drive-thrus or kiosks, ESPECIALLY if it's raining and you can't register a finger print. You should give the user the option to set limits. I don't mind verifying if I'm paying for a dinner. It's annoying to do for $3 coffee. Original: Not a fan of having to unlock for every transaction, it would be nice if there was threshold or opt out. Fix that and we're back to 5 stars

To provide a more secure and consistent in-store payments experience, Google Wallet now requires on-device authentication before completing a payment, regardless of the amount. This means you'll need to unlock your phone using a PIN, pattern, passcode, or Class 3 biometric for all non-transit tap-to-pay transactions. Learn more: g.co/help/3xjh9.
