[Session] Overview of technical areas & projects in Wikimedia's technical ecosystem
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

(Please set yourself as task assignee of this session)

  • Title of session: Overview of technical areas & projects in Wikimedia's technical ecosystem
  • Session description: This session will look at a wide range of technical areas and projects for newcomers to contribute to as a volunteer in the Wikimedia ecosystem. We will also cover the contribution process steps and different venues (e.g., mentoring programs & events) through which volunteers can get involved in community projects.

Event Timeline

Who is the expected target audience of this session? Newcomers themselves, people working with newcomers, or a different group of people?

@Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE This session is specifically for newcomers. Even though the event's focus this time is not on newcomers, a few might join from around Greece and would be interested in an overview of the technical ecosystem. There won't be a mentoring program session like previous hackathons, and all project-matching conversations will be facilitated via the opening ceremony. This is still a tentative idea, so if you have any thoughts/suggestions, open to taking them into account:)

I was just curious, thanks for clarifying :)

I hope there might be room for meta discussion regarding how/where we maintain this overview as a permanent resource. I've recently collected some pages that do this kind of summary/introduction (e.g. the Wikimedia Developer Portal, Introduction to the Wikimedia Technical Ecosystem, How to contribute, and probably others), and found that there's quite a bit of duplication. I would be interested in participating in a discussion on how we could consolidate or better integrate them.

Thanks for this proposal! All proposed sessions couldn't become part of the agenda published today due to limited space, including yours. I'll ping here if a room becomes available to organize remaining or impromptu sessions.

Hello! There is now additional space available for you to schedule a session: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2023/Program#Schedule (See "Small Hacking Room Corner (up to 20 participants)"). If you are still interested in organizing a session, you can claim this slot on a first-come, first-serve basis. There may not be any AV equipment in this small room, just a bunch of tables, and the room might be separated from the big hacking room with a bunch of dividers.

@Gopavasanth: Thanks for participating in the Hackathon! We hope you had a great time.

    • If there are session notes (e.g. on Etherpad or a wiki page), or if the session was recorded, please make sure these resources are linked from this task.
    • If there are specific follow-up tasks from this session / event: Please create dedicated tasks and add another active project tag to those tasks, so others can find those tasks (as likely nobody in the future will look at the Hackathon workboard when trying to find something they are interested in).
  • In this session / event did not take place: Please set the task status to declined.

Thank you,

No reply; assuming there that this session took place and that no followup is needed.
