“Being a part of FAR means being more connected to my roots. I was born in the Philippines, but moved here when I was two so I’ve always felt a little bit disconnected. I get more of a sense of who I am when I’m around other Filipinos and the lovely chaos they tend to bring. With Filipinos, it’s a welcoming and joyful atmosphere. When we eat, we eat everything. When we sing, no song is a bad choice as long as you belt it. When we dance, as long as you feel the music, you’re a star. I feel like it's a common thing to not take life too seriously. The fact that we’re all here in FAR to support each other and do what we can to represent our people is so important to me. I want to be shamelessly loud about where I come from. And if I get to make space for others to do the same, even better.”

“Growing up in the Philippines, I cherish the extraordinary memories I made. I can still vividly recall scaling mango and rambutan trees(my favorite fruits btw), with varying degrees of success, and catching spiders in matchboxes like they were our own little Pokémon among calamansi shrubs. Those moments were truly special. When my mom decided to move us to America, it was difficult for me to understand why we had to leave. But now, I deeply appreciate her decision as I know it was driven by her desire for a better future for us. Being a part of FAR is incredibly meaningful to me. My Filipino heritage has ingrained values like resilience, adaptability, and a strong sense of community, which continue to guide me in my work. Whether I am creating user experiences that connect people or staying grounded in my cultural roots, FAR provides me with a space to reflect on my past and bring these values into my professional endeavors. It serves as a constant reminder of my mother's sacrifices, inspiring me to give back in every way I can.”

Last week we hosted seven Filipino-owned businesses and two performance groups at our LA campus to celebrate Filipino American History Month, giving Rioters, their friends, and families the opportunity to support some local establishments!
