Maren Morris Says 'I Hope I Never Fall in Love' on New Song, Inspired by the 'Afterglow of a S---show'

Morris, whose divorce from ex-husband Ryan Hurd was finalized in January, is gearing up to release her new EP, 'Intermission'

Maren Morris feels fine on her own at the moment.

The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, 34, released the vulnerable track "I Hope I Never Fall in Love" on July 12 as the latest single from her upcoming EP, Intermission — and she's not holding back on her negative feelings toward romance.

The midtempo song finds Morris expressing hopes to remain single following the rough end of a relationship. "I hope I never fall in love / Hope I never fall in love again / You can hold me to that," she sings on the chorus.

She discusses hoping to remain strong in her prospects to avoid getting into another intense romance like the one that previously left her feeling scorned.

"I'm a woman of my word / Love, you only did me dirty / Forever was a f---in' lie, so goodbye / You only made it worse," Morris declares on the song's bridge.

The "My Church" musician, whose divorce from ex-husband Ryan Hurd was finalized in January, marked the song's release with an Instagram post and opened up in the caption about her true feelings toward romance — which are a bit more complicated than the song shows.

"'i hope i never fall in love' is the afterglow of a s---show," wrote Morris, who shares 4-year-old son Hayes with Hurd, 37. "it’s a bittersweet heartbreaker because I’m in self-protection mode but still want to feel things. throwing parties, going home with a stranger, popping champagne…"

She continued, "whatever we need to do to process our pain, it’s not always a pretty road to healing. i, of course, DO want to fall in love again, but I can’t put my heart through it just yet, so here’s a number about this strange but constructive (and destructive) window of my life."

Last month, Morris introduced the Intermission era with the Julia Michaels collaboration "Cut!" about appearing picture-perfect on the outside but feeling like an emotional mess in private.

"'Cut!' is about me holding myself together through the day, looking well-rested, not a hair out of place, not canceling any plans with friends because that’s how well I want you to think I’m doing," said Morris in a statement at the time. "Perhaps those things are all true, but at night I let the mask slip and let myself scream or fall apart to let the steam out of the kettle."

"It’s a cathartic release that doesn’t require secrecy, but there are worldly expectations to keep it together despite your feelings," she continued. "This song gives me permission to fall apart."

Intermission is out Aug. 2 via Columbia Records.
