Lena Dunham Says She's in a 'Peaceful' Place in Her Life Thanks to Her 'Lovely Husband' (Exclusive)

Lena Dunham says she’s “boring” in this era of her life — and that’s a good thing. 

“I am so lucky in that the last years have been, I would argue, the most peaceful of my life,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively when discussing her new movie Treasure (in theaters Friday, June 14) from home. 

“Sometimes I feel like I am boring on the phone with my friends, because I have a lovely husband who I adore collaborating with,” says Dunham, 38, of Luis Felber, who she met and married in 2021. 

Of her “adorable pets,” she adds with a grin, “we’ve heard them screaming.” Indeed, one of the Golden Globe winner’s dogs has no qualms about interrupting a press interview with joyful howls.

“Yes, we’ve heard them,” quips her Treasure costar Stephen Fry via a separate webcam. He laughs when a cat saunters across Dunham’s screen in front of her face. 

“I just finished a TV show, writing and directing 10 episodes,” continues Dunham, the creator-producer of the upcoming comedy Too Much starring Megan Stalter and Will Sharpe and co-created with Felber, 38. On the Netflix series, she adds, “I was lucky enough to have Mr. Stephen Fry in it, which was a life-changing joy.”

And as far as her physical health, which has included issues with endometriosis, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and addiction to benzodiazepines (she’s been sober since 2018), Dunham tells PEOPLE, “My body will always have its ups and downs.”

But, she says, “I still get to be a person doing the job that I love. So while I will no doubt find a way to complain this week, I don't have any right to.”

Fry, 66, has become a mentor and friend since their collaboration on Treasure, Julia von Heinz's adaptation of Lily Brett's 1999 novel Too Many Men about a Holocaust survivor and his daughter. “My constant feeling, that the truth is best, has occasionally been met with a, ‘Never mind. No, it's not.’ ” 

That’s not the case with the equally forthright English actor-filmmaker, says Dunham. “Stephen's been a huge inspiration to me in the willingness that he has shown to speak about those things.” 

She adds jokingly, “Stephen and I just got married last week.” 

Fry, who’s been married to Elliott Spencer since 2015, immediately joins in: “It was a shock to our relative spouses. So my husband is going to marry your husband, Luis. Nice and symmetrical.”

“Yeah, we're really excited,” adds Dunham.
