Bryan Abasolo Says He Was 'Sleeping in a Different Bedroom' Before Filing for Divorce from Rachel Lindsay

Abasolo also claimed that he learned what his Bachelorette wife was up to "mainly on Instagram, although we lived in the same house"

Bryan Abasolo is shedding more light on the separate lives he and ex Rachel Lindsay were living before he filed for divorce in January.

The 44-year-old chiropractor revealed during an interview with his divorce coach Rene Garcia that he was considering divorce because he “had already asked for a separation a few months back.”

“I was sleeping in a different bedroom. We were already going to marriage counseling,” he said.

After couples counseling “seemed to be working,” Abasolo admitted he initially had second thoughts about initiating the split, saying, “I actually set aside my divorce thoughts to give the relationship one last major push but as time went on, things just went right back to the way they were.”

Abasolo noted he and the former Bachelorette had an “unhealthy communication pattern.”

“We didn’t spend enough time with each other,” he explained. “I mean, in my estimation, we saw what the other person was doing in the relationship, mainly on Instagram, although we lived in the same house.”

Ultimately, Abasolo claimed that he asked for a divorce after an argument on December 31, 2023.

“That was one of the toughest things I ever had to do in my life. How I felt when I did it, I felt like I was being blindfolded and then suddenly I was able to see sunlight,” he recalled. “ It was uncomfortable and then there was the other end of the spectrum, there was all this fear that entered my body.”

“It was just a huge mix of emotions so on one end, I was in a weird friend zone situation for a while and we started to live different lives and our interests and our priorities,” he continued. “They … no longer aligned and if I look at the other aspect of it, there was this huge admiration for her and all these amazing times and amazing feelings at us both starting with very little and being part of a true team that cared about each other and I felt like I was doing my part as a husband and that felt great.”

“There came a time where I needed to stop letting circumstances and my fear delay what was inevitably going to happen,” he concluded.

A rep for Lindsay did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Abasolo filed for divorce from Lindsay, 39, after four years of marriage on Jan. 2, citing irreconcilable differences. In a since-deleted statement on Instagram, he shared that they had "made the difficult decision to part ways and start anew."

In May, he requested emergency spousal support and at least $75,000 in legal fees from his ex, who then claimed he was "not in need" of the funds, which she said "far exceed the actual marital lifestyle and his need" in documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Lindsay said that the $16,000 annual income Abasolo claimed in his filing is "less than he would [earn] if he worked at McDonalds," and said his "ability and opportunity to generate income...enable[s] him to support himself."

He then reaffirmed the request for $16,000 of monthly spousal support, and in a July 10 court appearance, he was granted his wishes as the judge ordered Lindsay to pay him "temporary spousal support in the sum of $13,257 per month" starting on July 15, with no specified end date. She was also ordered to pay $20,000 in his legal fees.

While the couple went back and forth over spousal support, they also exchanged varying claims about the nature of their relationship, as Lindsay claimed she was informed that Abasolo had filed for divorce via text, which he then denied. She also said that their "marital standard of living was nowhere near as glamorous as [he] portrays it to be."

Abasolo provided more text messages and said she was not "surprised or shocked" by his filing, despite claiming she was, and said Lindsay "never showed any interest in [his] business" and that her "jet-setting career often took her away from our martial residence while I stayed home."

He further alleged that she wanted him "out of the way" and "not involved in 'Hollywood,'" and would go so far as to "disinvite [him] to parties or events and then go with her industry friends instead."
