Manahawkin, NJ, February 6, 2025 &hellip; There are a number of tools and techniques cardiologists use to evaluate a person&rsquo;s heart health, including echocardiogram, electrocardiogram, cardiac stress test, and cardiac catheterization. Over the past several years an increasing number of non-invasive tests have been found to also accurately diagnose heart disease &ndash; including CT Calcium Scoring, a scan of the arteries that supply the heart with blood.<a href="https://doctors.hackensackmeridianhealth.org/provider/mahesh-kumar-tekriwal/1318909" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> Mahesh Tekriwal, MD</a>, chair of cardiology at Hackensack Meridian Southern Ocean Medical Center shares more:
While calcium is necessary for our bodies to remain healthy, too much of it in the heart&rsquo;s arteries can be an indicator that plaque is building up in coronary arteries. This build up causes narrowing or blockages in the coronary arteries, which can increase your risk of heart attack. An outpatient imaging procedure called a CT or CAT scan uses an electron beam with a low dose of radiation to measure the amount of calcium in the heart&rsquo;s arteries. No infusion of a contrast dye is necessary and the scan takes about 10 minutes to complete. 
The results of the calcium scan are given as a score. The more calcium that is present and evidence of artery thickening, the higher the score. A higher score indicates a greater likelihood of developing heart disease or having a heart attack. For example, a score of zero means no calcium is seen in the heart; a score greater than 300 is a sign of severe disease and heart attack risk. 
Calcium scans may not be for everyone. They may not benefit people with few or no risk factors for heart disease in addition to those identified as having high-risk factors like elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes. The scan also may not benefit those who are already diagnosed with heart disease or have had a heart attack, stroke, bypass surgery or stents implanted. People with just some risk factors may benefit the most from calcium scans in conjunction with a detailed medical history and at times other functional tests.
Once the results from a calcium scan are available, your care team will have a better understanding as to what type of approach to take should you need treatment &ndash; for instance, more exploration may be needed via cardiac catheterization, or you may need medications or advanced treatment with stenting. Monitoring your heart health with tools like a calcium scan can ultimately lead to better health outcomes.
Hackensack Meridian Health also offers AngioScreen, a comprehensive heart and vascular screening. This simple, noninvasive evaluation helps identify risk for heart disease and stroke. January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

Regular Pap smears and testing for HPV are key screenings that can detect cellular abnormalities on the cervix. <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/cervical-cancer/screening/index.html" target="_blank" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.cdc.gov/cervical-cancer/screening/index.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1736443561992000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0GXpGhLUiIVNH6b3MROmD-" rel="nofollow">Currently</a>, all women aged 21 through 65 are recommended to have one or both of these screenings at regular intervals depending on family and medical history. 
A recently issued U.S. Preventive Services Task Force draft recommendation <a href="https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/uspstf/sites/default/files/file/supporting_documents/cervical-cancer-screening-draft-rec-bulletin_0.pdf" target="_blank" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/uspstf/sites/default/files/file/supporting_documents/cervical-cancer-screening-draft-rec-bulletin_0.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1736443561992000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1pd8YuFPFbj8b7EXQ4CydI" rel="nofollow">statement</a> on cervical cancer screening advocates for HPV testing every five years as the primary approach for cervical cancer screening for women ages 30 to 65. The draft recommendation includes Pap smear screening every three years or combined Pap and HPV screening (co-testing) every five years for women in this age group who are of average risk. While Pap smears and co-testing are part of current guidelines, the USPSTF lists these as alternative approaches in the recently issued draft recommendation. And for the first time, the USPSTF included a self-collection of HPV cells as part of its recommendation. 
&ldquo;Nearly 85 percent of people have an HPV infection in their lifetime. Many will never know it, thus may unknowingly pass it along through sexual contact. Pap smears have long been a gold standard of detecting cervical cancer, and HPV testing has proven to be another effective screening tool. We&rsquo;re faced with it every holiday season: delectable treats we &ldquo;can&rsquo;t resist&rdquo; for one reason or another, thus we overindulge. An American Heart Association <a href="https://newsroom.heart.org/news/new-survey-79-of-survey-respondents-overlook-their-health-needs-during-the-holidays-find-the-holidays-more-stressful-than-tax-season#:~:text=Survey%20Highlights:&amp;text=Overall%2C%20respondents%20(63%25)%20claimed,prioritizing%20during%20the%20holiday%20season." rel="nofollow" target="_blank">survey</a> found that 69 percent of respondents had trouble prioritizing healthy eating during this time of year. Throw in traveling, shopping, decorating and visiting, and you can see why. And for those dealing with chronic illness like diabetes or high blood pressure, the holiday period can be especially challenging. Robert Hildebrandt, MBA, RDN, CDCES, from the <a href="https://www.hackensackmeridianhealth.org/en/services/endocrinology-and-diabetes" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Diabetes Management Center</a> at Hackensack Meridian Health <a href="https://www.hackensackmeridianhealth.org/en/locations/southern-ocean-medical-center" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Southern Ocean Medical Center</a> has some tips on how to enjoy the festivities without putting your health at risk.
Don&rsquo;t drink your calories: Your best friend may make that incredible, seasonal cocktail that everyone enjoys. Ask yourself if you really need it. Alcoholic beverages, egg nog and specialty coffee drinks are loaded with calories and added sugar. Having just one or two of those drinks can add up to that of a meal or more. What to do? Swap the alcohol for seltzer or plain water with seasonal fruit like apple slices or berries mixed in - or enjoy a cup of tea with chai herbs or a cinnamon stick. Alcohol can also lower your inhibitions, resulting in overeating.
Don&rsquo;t linger: Most people tend to gather around a buffet table, appetizer tray or charcuterie board upon arrival to a party. Even if you&rsquo;re not hungry, such delicious looking treats can tempt you to graze and overeat without thinking. This becomes even more challenging when a main course is served. You&rsquo;re already full, but you don&rsquo;t want to offend your host - so you eat more. Avoid this scenario by skipping the appetizers and instead take the time to move around and talk to family and friends. If you can&rsquo;t resist, look for healthier options such as shrimp cocktail and other meats (not fried) and vegetables. Be aware of pre-packaged, frozen appetizers which tend to be ultraprocessed and have a high salt intake. And skip or limit the sauces - this way, you&rsquo;ll be ready for something else you&rsquo;re really looking forward to.
Bring your own: There&rsquo;s always that one gathering that is over the top when it comes to food - leaving you no choice but to eat something you know you shouldn&rsquo;t. If you&rsquo;re stuck in this situation, moderation is always key. Look for leaner proteins and skip special sauces, bread and rolls. Even asking your host in advance if a small salad can be set aside for you is a reasonable request that won&rsquo;t put anyone out - or bring your own. Feel free to bring a dish or two of something on the healthier side. By doing this, you are assuring that there is a healthy alternative for you &ndash; your host will definitely thank you, and others in the same boat as you will as well.
A holiday treat: Desserts and treats should be just that &ndash; an occasional treat, not an everyday indulgence. Especially if you have a chronic condition or are trying to maintain a healthy weight, don&rsquo;t put yourself in a tempting position. Fruit is always a good selection (and also easy to bring). If you decide to enjoy, take a small portion of your favorite sweet treat, and resist &lsquo;seconds.&rsquo; And watch those cookies - they may be small, but the calories, sugar and fat from too many of them can add up to be more than a piece of cake or pie.
Don&rsquo;t Turn the Holidays Into a Week-Long Feast: It&rsquo;s easy to let the festivities stretch beyond a single day. Leftovers, pies, cookies, and other indulgent treats often linger for days after the holiday, turning what could be a one-day celebration into a week-long feast. This habit can lead to consuming far more calories, sugar, and fat than intended.
To avoid this, be mindful of portion sizes when serving yourself leftovers. Freeze extra holiday dishes in individual portions for future meals instead of keeping them in plain sight. If you&rsquo;re hosting, encourage guests to take home some of the food. If you&rsquo;re attending an event, politely decline when offered a plate of sweets to-go. By keeping the indulgences limited to the holiday itself, you&rsquo;ll prevent overindulgence from becoming a daily occurrence and set yourself up for a healthier, more balanced week.&nbsp;
What to do: Get creative! Small food and drink swaps will go a long way, especially during this period of endless festivities. Enlist a buddy: ask your friends and loved ones to support you during this time and to not sabotage your efforts or get upset with you if you don&rsquo;t take part in the usual traditions. And mix it up - it&rsquo;s not all about eating and drinking. Holiday party fun can come in the form of playing games, going for a walk, looking at old photos, and conversing and connecting. When the season is over and you don&rsquo;t feel sluggish and are ready to start a new year feeling great, you&rsquo;ll be glad you made these small adjustments.

The American Heart Association presents its Get With The Guidelines&reg; - Heart Failure awards for proven dedication to ensuring all heart failure patients have access to best practices and life-saving care

Edison, NJ, November 26, 2024 &hellip; The American Heart Association recognized eight Hackensack Meridian Health hospitals with Get With The Guidelines&reg; - Heart Failure quality achievement awards for their cardiac teams&rsquo; commitment to improving outcomes for patients with heart failure, resulting in reduced readmissions, and more healthy days at home. The Hackensack Meridian hospitals that received awards include the following.

About 6 million U.S. adults are living with heart failure (HF), a number that is expected to increase to more than 8 million by 2030. Despite the name, HF doesn&rsquo;t mean that the heart has stopped working &ndash; it means the heart is having a hard time pumping blood and oxygen throughout the body. While there&rsquo;s no cure for HF, patients can live a quality life by working with their health care team to create and stick with a plan that may include medication, symptom monitoring and lifestyle changes.
The Get With The Guidelines - Heart Failure quality achievement award is earned by hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to treating patients according to the most up-to-date guidelines as outlined by the American Heart Association (AHA). Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the AHA to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest research- and evidence-based guidelines. The program aims to increase healthy days at home and reduce hospital readmissions for heart failure patients. 
Each year, program participants qualify for the award recognition by demonstrating how their organization has committed to providing quality care for HF patients. In addition to following treatment guidelines, Get With The Guidelines participants also provide education to patients to help them manage their HF at home.

The end goal is to ensure more people in New Jersey experience longer, healthier lives.&rdquo;
Ocean University Medical Center, JFK University Medical Center, Hackensack University Medical Center, Riverview Medical Center, Palisades Medical Center, Bayshore Medical Center, and Southern Ocean Medical Center received Gold Plus Awards with Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. Jersey Shore University Medical Center received the Gold Plus Award.
The AHA&rsquo;s recognition levels recognize the goal of treating patients with 85 percent or higher compliance to core standards of care outlined by the AHA over increasing lengths of time, culminating in two consecutive calendar years for Gold Plus. Hospitals receiving the Target: Heart Failure Honor Roll are required to meet specific criteria that improves medication adherence, provides early followup care and coordination and enhances patient education. Hospitals receiving Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll, demonstrate that patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to heart disease.

American College of Cardiology NCDR Chest Pain &#822; MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award recognizes sustained, high level performance in quality of care
Neptune, NJ, November 18, 2024 &hellip; Five Hackensack Meridian medical centers received the American College of Cardiology&rsquo;s (ACC) NCDR Chest Pain &#822; MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award, joining just 259 hospitals nationally, another received the Gold Performance Achievement Award and two others the Silver Award for 2024. The award recognizes the medical centers&rsquo; commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies they have reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the ACC/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations. 
 
A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among others.

For the subsequent awards, Gold and Silver, the medical centers participated in the MI Registry for shorter periods of time and performed with distinction in specific performance measures.

In honor of those who served our country, Southern Ocean Medical Center and other Hackensack Meridian Health hospitals across the state were proud to participate in &lsquo;Operation Green Light&rsquo; this month to let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported. The Veterans Day initiative that encourages buildings to be illuminated with green light is sponsored by the National Association of Counties and the&#8239;National Association of County Veterans Service Officers as a way to show respect for the sacrifices our veterans have made.
