ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ

ਕੌਮ ਜਾਂ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ (ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ:Nation, ਨੇਸ਼ਨ) ਇੱਕ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਅਤੇ/ਜਾਂ ਜਾਤੀਮੂਲਕ ਇਕਾਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੇਸ਼ ਜਾਂ ਮੁਲਕ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਈ, ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ, ਜਾਤ, ਘਰਾਣੇ ਜਾਂ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਸਾਂਝ ਸਦਕਾ ਇੱਕ ਫ਼ਿਰਕੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਵਿਚਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਹੇਠ ਕੌਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੌਤਿਕ ਹੱਦਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ। ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਲੋਕ ਵੀ ਕੌਮ ਹਨ, ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਖੇਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਮਿਸਾਲ ਵਜੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਸਿਰਮੌਰ ਮੁਲਕ ਦੇ ਵਾਸੀ)।^[1]^[2] ਨੇਸ਼ਨ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਢੁਕਵੇਂ ਤੌਰ 'ਤੇ ਉੱਤਰੀ ਅਮਰੀਕੀ ਇੰਡੀਅਨਜ਼ ਲਈ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।^[3]
