About of the European Union

The European Union (EU) is a supranational political and economic union of 27 member states located primarily in Europe. The Union has a total area of 1,634,469 square miles (4,233,255 square kilometers) and a population of more than 449 million. Through a standardized system of laws in force in all countries of the union, a common market has been created to guarantee the free movement of people, goods, capital and services, including the abolition of passport controls within the Schengen Area, which includes both member countries and other European states.
