Hi all. I finally have all the track laid on my new layout, and will start drilling holes to pass the wires through next.

Does anyone recommend a decent (read: not expensive) handheld battery/rechargeable vac for the the layout from their experience?

Any help appreciated!

There's a current thread about someone using a MOOSOO vacuum to make a vacuum car.  That vacuum may work for you.  I was thinking about a similar project a while back and mentioned it to my wife, asked her to keep an eye out.  Her next trip to Marshall's, Home Goods or TJ Maxx, whichever it was she brought me home a Bissel rechargeable compact handheld that was too big for that purpose but it works well for general clean up around the layout.

I use this one from Harbor Freight. While it's probable more than what the OP is looking for, it's a nice shop vac that can be run corded or cordless. It can also be used as a blower by switching the hose from the inlet to the outlet. I don't have any power tools that run on Hercules batteries so I also picked up a battery adapter from amazon to use my Milwaukee batteries with it.

I highly recommend the Shark Cyclone series CH700.  They sell for around $50.  The on off switch is easy to operate, it comes with a crevice attachment that works really well at getting into to tight spaces and the exhaust exits out of the rear, away from the surface being vacuumed,  This is quite important because the B&D Dusbuster and most others exhaust out the bottom which often blows delicate scenery on the table that is being vacuumed.

Congratulations on starting your new layout and goodluck on your vacuums choice,

Don
