Latest news 📣 Defence has signed a contract with a New Zealand business for a service to improve New Zealand’s maritime awareness. A project for improved protection against maritime threats received $14.6 million in funding in Budget 24, and Cabinet has approved the final business case. After an extensive international search, a contract for a subscription to a cloud-based platform is being awarded to New Zealand company Starboard Maritime Intelligence. The system will provide a real-time picture of what is happening in New Zealand’s extensive maritime domain and provide a global history of arriving vessels. Protect what you love (and need).. World Ocean Day is this Saturday June 8.  To celebrate, Kiwis up and down the country are taking the plunge in the winter dip, and this year - national landmarks around the country are lighting up blue – raising the national consciousness of the critical need for a healthy ocean. On the same day people will take to the streets, marching for nature. Kiwis love the ocean – The Live Ocean Barometer showed 95% of us think the ocean is important. 77% of people think marine protection should be expanded (67% of them were recreational fishers). We might love different things about it, whether it’s swimming, going for a fish, collecting kaimoana, sailing, surfing, walking along side it or a sneaky view when you turn a corner. It’s beautiful.  But then there is the stark fact the ocean makes our human journey possible. We love it, but we sure do need it to survive. So as an ocean loving nation, you’d think we’d be a world leader in protecting it. Wrong. In global rankings we are last equal with Russia and China – New Zealand currently protects less than 1%. With our only current chance for change now before Parliament, the Hauraki Gulf Tikapa Moana Marine Protection Bill has the opportunity to increase marine protection in the Gulf by almost 6%. A desperately needed 6% that will allow kelp forests to regrow, fish populations the space to recover and ecosystems to return from the brink of collapse. Scientists, advocates, sailors Peter Burling Blair Tuke epic endurance swimmers Jono Ridler, NGOs, government bodies, an effort by so many, calling for us to protect what we love. In the next few weeks, the government has a decision to make. The select committee will release their findings on 20 June and then it will go to Cabinet and be considered by Parliament in its second reading/debate. We want communities that are safe, connected and empowered. To help us get there, we've partnered up with Massey University to lead an original research project into lived experiences of communities affected by the Auckland Anniversary Weekend floods and Cyclone Gabrielle in early 2023.   We know that during disasters, frontline communities form an essential part of response and recovery. They may complement or fill needs not otherwise met by authorities, and communities that work together recover faster, becoming more resilient. Through surveys, interviews and focus groups we seek to understand how communities in Auckland, Tairāwhiti and Hawke’s Bay responded. With those communities we will co-design a roadmap to guide authorities on how to build climate resilient, better-prepared communities. If you were you living in Auckland, Tairāwhiti or Hawke’s Bay region during the Auckland Anniversary Weekend Floods and Cyclone Gabrielle, we want to hear from you! Your lived experience will help build a roadmap for how authorities can better support communities to respond and recover, and build a climate resilient Aotearoa. Everyone is welcome to take part!
