WasteMINZ exists to make a positive impact on Aotearoa New Zealand

About us

WasteMINZ exists to make a positive impact on Aotearoa New Zealand. We are the largest representative body of Aotearoa New Zealand's waste, resource recovery and contaminated land sectors. But it’s not all rubbish bins and recycling. Our eight sector groups provide best practice guidance, thought leadership and resources on some of Aotearoa’s pressing issues – such as the circular economy, right to repair, sustainable practices for businesses, lead contamination in residential properties, kerbside collections, a container return scheme and food waste.

Free tyre collections kick off across Aotearoa New Zealand from today, September 1! This means you can rest assured your tyres will be properly managed at their end of life, rather than go to landfill, be stockpiled, or illegally dumped, says Adele Rose, CE of Tyrewise Scheme Manager 3R Group.  “New Zealand doesn’t have a great record on recovering and recycling tyres. Of the 6.5 million which reach the end of their life each year, only about 40% are being recycled – that will change with Tyrewise,” she says.  Tyrewise has a target of 80% of tyres recovered, for recycling or use in a new product, by its fourth year, and over 90% by its sixth year 🥳🥳🥳

Join Wayne Scott and Don Chittock from the Aggregates and Quarrying Association of New Zealand, as they talk you through the effects of the Waste Minimisation (Waste Disposal Levy) Amendment Act 2024 on the aggregate and quarry sector. This 60 minute webinar will provide an insight into: 🔷 Why quarries require fill and ongoing legal commitments. 🔷The importance of soils and fill for quarries and how it is used/ reused. 🔷The impacts of the introduction of another legal requirement designed to drive higher recycling / circularity on existing consented and/or authorised (bylaw license) activity. 🔷The confusion and conflict created by the “mix” of legislative requirements imposed on fill operators and the construction industry. 🔷Issues created by the positions councils take on fill and fill sites. 🔴 The Environmental Protection Authority NZ has issued a Red Alert Notice for chlorthal-dimethyl herbicides, and has advised that anyone using the chemical stops now.

RED ALERT NOTICE: chlorthal-dimethyl (also known as DCPA) If you use any products containing this chemical, we advise you stop using them now. We’ve issued a red alert because of significant concerns about the effects of chlorthal-dimethyl on unborn children. Our alert comes after the United States EPA issued an emergency order to ban products containing this substance. In New Zealand, the chemical is mainly used to target weeds in onion crops, forest nurseries, and among ornamental plants. But it has been available to consumers, so check your shed and put it aside if you find some. We’ve set up a working group to look at how widely this weedkiller is being used here, and to take rapid action if necessary to continue protecting people’s health and safety.
