We love bringing our expertise to relationships that help communities to thrive, and growing our own knowledge at the same time. One such relationship is between ourselves and Tāwhaki, a partnership between the New Zealand Government and the indigenous people of Kaitorete – Wairewa Rūnanga and Te Taumutu Rūnanga. It has established the Tāwhaki National Aerospace Centre at Kaitorete: a multi-use facility in a prime location 50 minutes from Ōtautahi (Christchurch) from which to launch and discover new horizons for the aerospace industry. Its mission is to help advance the aerospace sector in Aotearoa and heal and rejuvenate the unique whenua at Kaitorete to create enduring opportunities for its its communities, region and country. In this video, check out Tāwhaki and AgResearch leaders discussing the relationship and path ahead 🤝🔬🎥

🌱 Weaving mātauranga and soil science together to understand the past at Kaitorete 🌱   An exciting joint research project with Te Whare Wānaka o Aoraki Lincoln University (NZ) and Tāwhaki has delivered fresh insights on activity at the southern end of Kaitorete.   Soil samples collected from a range of rua (pits) were analysed in the university lab for plant microfossils and found to have significant traces of tuberous vegetable - most likely kūmara. This research brings the past to life in the most vivid way, providing a strong foundation for reconnecting whānau with this whenua. Mātauranga (indigenous knowledge) held by Kaitorete mana whenua has guided what to look for and where, and how to interpret findings, and soil science has delivered new ways of understanding it.   A huge mihi to the Brian Mason Scientific & Technical Trust for their generous support of this project and all who shared their knowledge and expertise.   Further research opportunities for developing an even more comprehensive understanding of this landscape have been identified and we look forward to learning more from this whenua and reconnecting to help plan for the future.   Research team: Julie Gillespie | Carol Smith | Dyanna Jolly | Rulon Nutira | Julian Phillips | Erana Riddell   Te Taumutu Runanga #WairewaRūnanga Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment #taiao #whenua

Excellent visit at Tāwhaki to chat with the Tawhaki team and see the new hangar and runway on Kaitorete Spit. There are many opportunities for New Zealand in the advanced aviation area. Once we bring in our new ‘can-do’ light-touch regulations, Tāwhaki will be well placed to grow the regional and national economy.

Taking steps to advance uncrewed aircraft operations with our friends at Airways International Ltd (AIL)   Great to complete the first project with Airways after our collaboration agreement was announced in June.    The AirShare UTM is now live at Tāwhaki National Aerospace Centre - helping facilitate all uncrewed aircraft operations at the centre and enhancing situational awareness by providing a picture of airspace activity at and around Tāwhaki.   Advanced UTM features will also be trialled, with input from operators, Tāwhaki and Airways to gather data on how UTM supports the development of a modern, safe airspace that serves all users.    Read more at: https://lnkd.in/gUmnqV4f   Te Taumutu Runanga #WairewaRūnanga Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment #UTM #UAV #RPAS #aerospace #advancedaviation #aerospaceNZ ChristchurchNZ

How do we transport people and goods more sustainably? Hydrogen-powered aircraft with zero emissions are one of the leading solutions.🌿 We loved hosting our mates at AMSL Aero today at Tāwhaki National Aerospace Centre to understand more about their mission and testing needs. Australian-based AMSL is developing Vertiia, the world's first long-range hydrogen-powered vertical take-off and landing (#VTOL) aircraft. It's designed to act as an air ambulance or for passenger or cargo transport and operate: at 300 km/h over 1000 km range  with a 10-minute refuel time quieter than a helicopter AMSL were joined by more of our Aussie mates - Stralis Aircraft (YC W23) on a return visit. Stralis are working on ambitious plans to introduce zero-emission hydrogen-electric aircraft at scale. Working together to advance aerospace solutions that benefit people and the planet - this is what it's all about! Full system 🔥 hotfire🔥 test complete ✅. We are now flight-ready for Campaign 2-3 and attempting to fly supersonic! Yesterday at the Tāwhaki National Aerospace Center, we completed the final full system, to prove all systems are ready to push the limits once again. Just 4 weeks ago, we were out flying, reaching Mach 0.92 and 50,000ft. Since then, the team has been busy with upgrades: -reduced the vehicle dry mass by 3% 📉 -increase engine thrust by +9% 📈 -added ‘run dry’ capability to the propellant pumps, giving us nearly 100% propellant utilisation. ⛽ All these upgrades give us plenty of performance margin to get to the upper layers of the stratosphere and fly supersonic. We anticipate our next flight test campaign to be in September, weather permitting. This is incremental development in action!
