Empowering business so people and nature prosper.

About us

Empowering business so people and nature prosper. The Sustainable Business Network is New Zealand’s largest, longest-standing sustainable business organisation. Our network consists of hundreds of progressive organisations and people that collectively invest in and act on system change. Together we focus on climate, waste and water. We’re a social enterprise, a community and a movement. Our role is to transform leading ideas into action in Aotearoa. It’s easy to join our independent network as an Investor for Impact. Investors invest in people and nature by funding our essential work on system change. This enables us to influence and transform the climate, waste and water systems together.

  • Our man Andy put on his closest to decent shirt the other day (with his wonky glasses) to present our submission to the The Crown Minerals Amendment Bill. We hope it was worth it. It was an odd experience, speaking to what turned out to be largely friendly MPs about a proposal that we described as: "unnecessary, rushed and retrograde", as well as "unlikely to solve any issues claimed, while being likely to trigger other negative outcomes." These included possible "complicity in the death and displacement of millions of people." Although there were MPs there from the parties proposing the Bill, not one of them questioned or criticized that assessment in the few minutes they had to respond. That, combined with the ludicrously short submission period of a few days around a holiday weekend, makes us wonder whether they were really listening, or had simply been told to turn up and smile, because they consider it all a foregone conclusion? Just so we didn't completely waste all our time, our full submission is linked in the comments below.

  • Please make a select committee submission in opposition to the Crown Minerals Amendment Bill. Reopening oil and gas exploration makes no sense in tackling short term energy issues. It'll take too long to come on stream. It makes no sense in the long term. Climate change means we have to radically reduce our fossil fuel use. It's reckless to do so in the absence of a coherent strategy to decarbonise our economy. Submit now: https://lnkd.in/gZxySkiB

  • Business as usual is dead. Bring on the new era! We've been running the Sustainable Business Awards for 22 successful years. But this year, we threw out our own rule book. The response has been massive. Why the change? Read the news. We’ve seen some mind-blowing advances over the years. But so far they’re not stacking up to the Aotearoa New Zealand, or world, we want to live in. So we’re digging deeper, for the gold of true transformation. From this year on, the call is going out to the visionaries and innovators. Those bringing truly ground-breaking new ideas, or rapidly scaling sustainable ways of working. And that call's been heard. This year, the first in this new format, we only had two flagship categories: Disruptive Innovation and Transformational Leadership. We normally have nine or 10. We were hoping for about 60 entries. What we got was a record. More entries per category than in the entire Awards' history. Rachel Brown ONZM (She/Her) is our CEO and founder. She says: “I’m always heartened when the entries come in. This year, when we’ve raised the bar, I’m blown away. The message is clear. We need the disruptors and change makers. We need to shove business as usual into a new phase. To focus on regenerative actions. To be inclusive. To right the wrongs of extractive, polluting and linear business models. “We’ve got entries from business sectors we’ve not seen represented before. We're capturing the very best this country has to offer on technology, innovation and systemic change. I can’t wait for the wider business community to see what we have in store. It's set to inspire all of us to take more courageous leaps forward. That’s what I set SBN up for. That’s who we are.” To top it off, this year’s judges include experts from overseas as well as Kiwis who’ve made waves. It will ensure these Awards stand up at a global scale. They are: - Brianne West. Environmentalist, entrepreneur, founder and CEO of Incrediballs, and founder/former CEO of Ethique. - Ken W.. Visiting Professor, Cranfield University. Fellow, Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. Head of Innovation, Ellen MacArthur Foundation from 2010-18. - Paul Johnston. Co-founder, Bean Supreme. Supply Chain and Distribution Manager, Life Health Foods. - Barry Coates. Founder and CEO of Mindful Money, former head of Oxfam Aotearoa and former Green MP - Jacqueline Farman. Co-founder of The Purpose Business, former CEO of Colmar Brunton The finalists will be announced in late October. The winners will be revealed at an Awards ceremony on 27 November. This morning's session at the Sustainable Business Network started with a beautiful karakia led by Rachel Brown ONZM (She/Her), setting the tone for a morning of inspiration and learning from a room full of sustainability-focused founders! We had the privilege of hearing from Vincent Heeringa and Will Barker, both doing incredible work in the sustainability space. I want to take a moment to highlight the fantastic work of Mint Innovation, led by Will Barker. 🌍✨ Mint Innovation is pioneering green circular metals, using climate-friendly e-waste technology to create a cleaner, more sustainable future. Their innovative approach is leading the way in restoring the planet through resource recovery. If you haven’t already, I highly encourage you to check out what they’re doing - it's great stuff! And, we got a great brew from the Altezano Brothers, yum. #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Innovation #ClimateAction #Ewaste
