👻🎃🕷️ 🐝✨ Trick or treat? This spooky transformation from beetle egg to wasp might look like a trick and it's certainly not a treat for the invasive eucalyptus tortoise beetle, which substantially damages eucalypt trees. Neopolycystus insectifurax (pictured) is a parasitoid meaning it lays its eggs inside the eggs of the eucalyptus tortoise beetle then develops inside the host. At first both egg and parasitoid are alive, before the host is eventually killed and a wasp emerges (think Xenomorphs from Alien). It doesn't get much spookier than that. This timelapse might give you goosebumps but parasitoids play a crucial role in keeping pests in check, ensuring our forests thrive🌳 Another parasitoid wasp, Eadya daenerys, was released to control Eucalyptus tortoise beetle in 2022 after a decade of research. Scion has been working on ways to stop the destructive beetle for more than 25 years. #Halloween #Nature #Transformation #Insects #Biodiversity #SpookyScience #Wasps #biodiversity #biosecurity

Locally produced Sustainable Aviation Fuel can be a $430 million gamechanger to reduce New Zealand’s aviation emissions. The results from a feasibility study into using woody waste residues and low-value wood products in New Zealand to make sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) are out now. The study was funded by Air New Zealand and the New Zealand Government, and undertaken in partnership with Scion, Z Energy (Z), and WoodBeca. Scion looked at: ✈ Biomass availability, harvest residues and industrial logs. And price indications ✈ Sustainability of biomass and a review of the current certification scheme ✈ Socio-economic benefits of a SAF plant Locally produced SAF could meet up to a quarter of the aviation fuel needed for domestic flights a year and a recent SAF delivery had an 89% life-cycle emissions saving versus the equivalent fossil jet fuel. Scion and our partners are helping accelerate the bioenergy industry in New Zealand. https://lnkd.in/g8ZXp-g5 Peter Hall | Paul Bennett | Shontelle Bishara | LanzaJet | MBIE Science and Innovation | Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) | New Zealand Trade and Enterprise | Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao | Hon Judith Collins KC MP | Todd McClay | Hon. A Scion-developed 3D virtual reality training tool for forestry workers is catching the eye of industry players. The tool teaches forestry recruits to make crucial thinning decisions through immersive virtual reality simulations of forests. Developed as part of the Forest Growers Research Ltd (FGR) Precision Silviculture Programme, options for the tool are limitless and Scion is now working with industry to ensure the tool can reflect their forests. It's been great to be involved in events to support the success of #HorizonEurope partnerships this week. First Yi Chen joined European Union in Aotearoa New Zealand in Hamilton to talk about our successful collaboration with EU partners on a #HorizonEurope project focused on sustainable biomaterials: https://lnkd.in/gAJz4sWJ 🌿 Then, we attended an event in Wellington hosted by EU Ambassador Lawrence Meredith and the EU Embassy team to share the successes of NZ-EU science collaboration, supported by the great team at MBIE Science and Innovation here and at the NZ Embassy in Brussels. We can't make impact without #collaboration and #international partners so being involved in a Horizon Europe research programme is a great opportunity to connect abroad. New Zealand is the first non-EU country to formally associate to Pillar II of Horizon Europe, and we’re proud that our collaboration in Horizon Europe’s Cluster 4 (Digital, Industry, and Space) is one of the first to be funded in New Zealand. #EUinNZ #Innovation #Research #Sustainability #StrongerTogether Hon Judith Collins KC MP | Todd McClay | EURAXESS | Simon Draper | Laurence Beau | Scott Willis | Science New Zealand | Iain Cossar | INRAE Roger Dungan
At the #HorizonEurope Roadshow in Wellington 🇳🇿🇪🇺, I highlighted the growing potential for research and innovation collaboration between New Zealand and the European Union. #HorizonEurope, the EU’s largest research and innovation program, opens new doors for international partnerships. 🤝 A special thank you to MBIE Science and Innovation, EURAXESS Australia & New Zealand and National Contact Points for their contributions to the roadshow’s success. Later, at the #HorizonEurope Reception, we gathered with key leaders for productive discussions on how to drive forward impactful research and innovation. 🔬🌍 Thank you to everyone who contributed to these important conversations. #HorizonEurope #Innovation #Research #EUinNZ #TeamEurope European Union in Aotearoa New Zealand | EU Science, Research and Innovation | European Research Executive Agency (REA) | Iain Cossar | Julian Elder | Scion | Nishant Shandilya | Frank Bloomfield | Grant Robertson | Chris Whelan | Diane Lacoste Chevalier | Mary Mulholland | Nancy November | Stephen MacDonell | John Cater | Iain White | Cecile de Klein | Andrew Sporle | Simon Lovatt | Cath Battersby | Eric Soulier | Anne Rouault | Jane Connolly | Neihana Waitai | Ashley Bloomfield KNZM CMInstD | Roger Dungan | Mike Roger | Peter Hunter | Frances Duignan | Beef + Lamb New Zealand | Onions New Zealand | Karin Kos | Kathrin Curtis | Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) | Richard Cotman | Terry Copeland | Scott Willis | The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited

Fantastic to host Mike McRoberts from NBR - National Business Review at Scion recently to learn more about this incredible collaborative project. A four-year project to develop livestock feed from geothermal gases has been awarded funding of nearly $5 million from Tauhara North No.2 Trust and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). Geothermal consultancy Upflow is the delivery partner for the project and partnering with researchers from Scion, the University of Canterbury and algae experts from Cawthron Institute. This world-first project to produce high-protein animal feed from waste CO2 and methane could be the start of a new industry worth $500 million per annum by 2045. It's a great example of #collaboration for #impact. Paul Siratovich | Andrea (Andy) Blair | Mana (Desterney) Newton | Marc Gaugler | Christophe Collet |
Mike McRoberts explores how a Māori trust, a group of scientists, and MPI have joined together for a world-first venture that could become an industry worth half a billion annually to the country. Manufacturing sustainable marine biofuel from wood that can be blended directly with existing marine fuel is a $600 million opportunity for New Zealand. And Scion is tapping in. Scion's world-leading technology could lead to a sustainable timber-based marine biofuel industry in New Zealand to help reduce the climate impact of shipping our exports to the world. We're working towards commercialising Scion’s game-changing marine biofuels technology. If successful, it could significantly contribute to decarbonising international shipping Find out more: https://lnkd.in/g5Qm5rJX #marinebiofuel #biofuel #technology #innovation #commercialisation #sustainable #climatechange #shipping Amanda Davies Florian Graichen Paul Bennett Hon Judith Collins KC MP Todd McClay
