📣 Calling all RM Auckland practitioners that work on large developments or infrastructure projects. RMLA Auckland branch are running a Social Impact Assessment - Presentation and Panel Discussion on Thursday 17 October from 5:30pm Whether you act for developers, infrastructure providers, decision-makers or submitters, understanding social impact assessment is a useful arrow in your quiver. Social Impact Assessment (SIA) is the well-established process of analysing and managing intended and unintended consequences of planned interventions on people. The process combines social research, community engagement, planning and management of social change, and focuses on affected individuals, groups, and communities. It can be applied to policy analysis, land use planning, infrastructure projects and used as part of optioneering processes. The SIA process usually has a focus on bringing about a more sustainable human environment. SIA has become firmly established as an important aspect of environmental impact assessment, including as part of matters covered by the Resource Management Act framework. All panel members have had extensive experience in RMA work in New Zealand and overseas. They bring a collective wealth and knowledge on SIA. Come and hear from experts Charlotte Lee (Beca), Julie Boucher (Just Add Lime Ltd) and Rebekah Pokura-Ward (NZTA) presenting how SIA has been used to positively influence resource management processes in Aotearoa. This will be followed by a panel discussion on current and future opportunities for SIA, and how these can be embedded into project delivery to facilitate positive outcomes. Light catering and drinks provided. All welcome. Resource Management Law Association | Te Kahui Ture Taiao reposted this
Unsurprisingly an event about social impact and outcomes was full of chatter and great debate. I was privileged to host the Resource Management Law Association | Te Kahui Ture Taiao event and chair the excellent panel of Julie Boucher, Charlotte Lee and Rebekah Pokura-Ward. We covered: 1. How Social Impact Assessment is a useful tool to deliver wider community benefit as part of plans, programmes and projects, including how to weigh up trade-offs 2. Overseas trends and opportunities to shift the conversation to think about community and public value of projects 3. And.... the Fast-Track Bill and where social considerations fit into this.... Looking forward to many more collaborations across the Aotearoa Social Impact Practitioner community. #RMLA #socialoutcomes #communityengagement #planning

The Finance & Operational Committee has released its recommendations on the cross-party Inquiry into Climate Adaptation. The scope of this inquiry was to consider objectives and principles to guide answers to the questions of “who pays”, “who does what” and “how are costs shared” when it comes to adapting to the effects of climate change. Join New Zealand Planning Institute and ourselves for a lunchtime panel discussion via webinar on the Inquiry into Climate Adaptation - Monday 21 October 2024 at midday. Our panellists Blair Dickie, Jen Vella, Cushla Loomb, and Emily Grace will provide a summary and discussion of the Committee’s report. Although RMLA didn’t submit to the Inquiry, Emily will highlight how the report aligns with what was sought by NZPI in its submissions. Blair is the Principal Strategic Advisor: Science and Strategy Directorate at Waikato Regional Council. His responsibilities include Central Government Advocacy, and portfolio responsibilities for Energy and Climate Change policy. Jen is a resource management legal and policy professional with over 20 years’ experience in private legal practice and central government policy in Aotearoa. Her areas of focus include the Resource Management Act, climate change mitigation/adaptation and Treaty settlements. Cushla is a Technical Fellow and Business Director - Climate Change Risk & Adaptation at Beca. Her work is focused on climate adaptation and resilience planning and environmental/social impact assessment, particularly in coastal environments in New Zealand and across the Pacific. Emily is NZPI’s Principal Policy Advisor and led the preparation of NZPI’s two submissions to the Inquiry, which were informed by membership feedback. Emily was also a member of the Expert Working Group on Managed Retreat, which made comprehensive recommendations for the design of a system for planned relocation in 2023.
