Yesterday morning at the Queenstown Business Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Glyn Lewers and our wider QLDC team shared inspiring perspectives on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to celebrate all things Rainbow and diversity as part of Pride Week. Here are a few things QLDC staff shared: 🔹 Kate Findlay (Organisation Development Manager) highlighted our commitment to creating a culture at QLDC where everyone can thrive and feel a genuine sense of belonging.  🔹 Mayor Glyn Lewers shared insights from his Māori heritage and upbringing, and his view of how QLDC supports DEI within our community and organisation.  🔹 Silvia Dancose (Welcoming Communities Coordinator) showcased her dedication to inclusivity through her impactful work with the Welcoming Communities programme in the Queenstown Lakes District.  🔹 Arne Burgess (Māori Strategy and Partnerships Manager) emphasised the importance of equity in our DEI efforts. As we celebrate Pride Week and the Business Excellence Series at the Queenstown Business Awards, QLDC’s proud to be continuing to support Pride Week, and to keep championing DEI in every aspect of our work and community.

This morning the QLDC Environmental Health team hosted Vincent Arbuckle, Deputy Director-General New Zealand Food Safety to talk through how we manage food safety in our district. The team also took the opportunity to showcase a range of edible treats and drinks from some of the incredible food operators in our district, of which there are plenty!

In this spirit I was saddened to hear that a number of street flags promoting the event were removed from the centre of Queenstown yesterday. My role as Mayor is to represent all of our community regardless of race, gender, disability, religion, or gender and sexual identity. I’m enormously proud to be Mayor of this district, and I’m equally proud that we’re hosting Winter Pride again this year. Whilst I respect anyone’s right not to engage in this celebration if they choose, I am firmly opposed to anyone who thinks they have the right to take choice away from others." Queenstown Lakes District Mayor Glyn Lewers has acknowledged a successful year for the Queenstown Airport Corporation which today released its financial report for 2023-2024. The performance of the QAC sees a record dividend payment to shareholders of $19.6 million, which is a direct payment to QLDC of $14.7 million. Queenstown Lakes District Libraries have announced the introduction of a fine-free model, removing overdue fines for all users to help eliminate financial barriers and encourage even greater accessibility to all library resources. Fines accumulated before Monday 1 July 2024 have also been wiped from all library member accounts in the district. Wānaka is set to welcome a safer way for kids and the wider public to cross State Highway 84, when a new signalised pedestrian crossing near the town centre is activated on Monday 19 August 2024 as part of work on the fourth stage of the Schools to Pool pathway. Queenstown Lakes District Council has appointed Katherine Harbrow to the position of Assurance, Finance and Risk General Manager. Ms Harbrow, who officially starts her new role on 12 August, succeeds long-standing Council manager Stewart Burns who is retiring after nearly 28 years’ service.
