We had such a fun night at Whangārei Fringe's 'Light the City' event earlier this week! This free, family-friendly event at Pūtahi Park saw different community groups from all over the city lighting up the night with fire, music, circus acts, and other performances. We also used this opportunity to share our brand-new power savings calculator and walked people through how by answering some simple questions and making some easy new habits, they can save money on their monthly power bills: https://lnkd.in/gzR-vYEp Thanks, Whangārei! #whangareifringe #fringefestival #lightthecity #community #powersavings #northpower #northpowernz

When we identified that one of our Whangārei transmission towers needed to be replaced, our project team collaborated with the local hapū - Te Parawhau - to shape the design of the tower and the construction process. Consultants from Edison Consulting Group and Lumen also provided essential support throughout the project. This project recently won the Engineering Excellence Award at the Electricity Engineers' Association of New Zealand awards. Read more about our partnership with Te Parawhau below. #hapū #iwiengagement #networktowerdesign #collaboration #northpower #northpowernz

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our former Chair Warren Moyes. Our hearts go out to his family and friends at this time. Warren was Northpower's Chair for 21 years, from 1993 until 2014 and during this time the business grew from a local electricity distributor in Northland to the intergenerational infrastructure company it is today. Our Contracting business, which employs more than 1,200 great people across the North Island got its start under Warren. He oversaw the creation of our fibre business and our expansion internationally. Northpower will always be grateful for his vision and confidence in our team.

In 2023, a cow’s tragic electrocution revealed a serious safety issue in Northpower's network: stay wires without essential insulators. Identifying which of the 57,230 poles had this issue was a daunting task, due to essential data missing from our databases. To tackle this, we assembled a diverse team of technology experts, asset engineers, and business representatives, collaborating with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Sculpt. Using AI, computer vision, and data science, we analysed roughly 800,000 inspection photos and 70,000 inspection protocols from the past 20 years. By applying Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and advanced Computer Vision models, we pinpointed poles with stay wires and easily detected defective insulators. This innovative approach identified 31 defective stay wires, which were promptly fixed, enhancing network safety, saving costs, and reducing carbon emissions when compared to manual inspections. Read a more in-depth breakdown of the solution over on the AWS blog: https://lnkd.in/gwwSSKJE Watch the full presentation Andreas and Carlos delivered at the Electricity Engineers' Association of New Zealand 2024 Conference on our website: https://lnkd.in/g3w6wgTf #computervision #aisolutions #ai #datascience #networksafety #electricity #amazonwebservices #northpower #northpowernz | Anthony Miles, Michael Gibbs, Chris Wang, Scott Patterson, Ed Overy, Nigel Stowe, Kayla Williams, Mac Jones

Community is what we create together. The theme for this year's Mental Health Awareness Week is Community. Community looks different for everyone — that's the beauty of it. It’s about connecting with others to create something together. This week, members of our Kaitiaki Network (internal peer-to-peer support network) all over Aotearoa are sharing personal stories about mental health, showcasing what community looks like for them, and putting on some classic BBQ breakfasts/lunches with the sole purpose of connection and community. Have a peek below at what our Whangārei team was up to today, and be sure to visit www.mhaw.nz to learn more about this awesome initiative! #mentalhealthawarenessweek #mhaw #mhaw2024 #community #wellbeing #northpower

It's Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), an annual celebration for all New Zealanders to show their support for the Māori language, an official language of this country! This year’s theme is "Ake ake ake – A Forever Language", celebrating the lasting importance of te Reo Māori. The theme reminds us that our language is timeless and should be cherished and used every day, for generations to come. Over more than 30 years, Te Wiki (the week) has developed from a single Māori Language Day to a week of celebration for all New Zealanders. This year’s Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is dedicated to the memory and contribution of beloved Kīngi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII. Find out more about Te Wiki o te Reo Māori by visiting: https://lnkd.in/gQZ8kzN, and together let's all make an effort to include more te Reo Māori in our vocabulary this week and into the future. Kia māhorahora te reo – let’s make it seen, let’s make it heard. #tewikiotereomāori #māorilanguageweek #tereomāori #northpower

We're looking back at the New Zealand Energy Excellence Awards ceremony from a few weeks ago! Northpower was up for three awards: The Energy Distributor of the Year Award for enabling our communities to thrive by powering a more sustainable future. Improving efficiency, capacity, and capability while sticking to our strategic priorities. The Community Initiative of the Year Award for our Home Energy Education programme, in partnership with LEDs by Ecobulb, which assists households in Whangārei and Kaipara facing energy hardship by helping them understand and reduce their electricity usage. And the Well-being Award for our focus on workplace wellbeing through regular wellbeing surveys and strong, people-led peer support networks. Even though we didn't take any away, it’s an honour to have been recognised alongside the other finalists. Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists of the night, and a big thank you to the New Zealand Energy Excellence Awards. We're proud of the work we're doing and are grateful to have been included. #energyexcellenceawards #newzealandenergyexcellenceawards #nzawards #energydistributor #community #energyeducation #wellbeing #workplacewellbeing #northpower #northpowernz
