The team at NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi are consulting on raising the speed limit on the Pūhoi to Warkworth expressway from 100km to 110km. As you might imagine we’re fans of being able to safely increase productivity and given the high quality of the road and it’s inherent safety design, we think raising the limit is sensible proposal. The Northland Corporate Group is a consortium of large businesses in Te Tai Tokerau with a shared vision of fostering economic prosperity in the region. Our combined annual turnover exceeds $1b, we employ more than 3,500 people and deliver essential services to 65% of our region’s population. Despite being the historic birthplace of Aotearoa New Zealand, Tai Tokerau Northland lags economically compared to the rest of the country, negatively affecting social, health, and educational outcomes. While the region boasts natural resource advantages and a rich cultural heritage, it faces challenges due to its geography and limited connectivity with the rest of the country. The lack of resilience in our roading infrastructure and transport corridor to Auckland isolates us, impacting freight, tourism, regional growth, and road safety. To unlock Tai Tokerau Northland's potential, urgent investment is needed to upgrade our roading infrastructure, enabling efficient and resilient tourism, commuter and freight routes to the rest of the country, as well as a wider economic contribution for established sectors of our regional economy. The Northland Corporate Group is funding the development of a comprehensive business case to show how substantive investment in resilient and efficient roading infrastructure for our region will: • support local and central government economic, social and environmental objectives, • help greater Auckland to mitigate infrastructure and housing challenges, • identify the latent capital investment ready to deploy in Northland.

With slips closing the Brynderwyn’s again last weekend, this is a welcome and timely announcement from Simeon Brown and the New Zealand Government. A quality, efficient #NorthlandExpressway will deliver $2b+ in GDP growth per annum for NZ. We’re pleased the Government is taking a strategic approach to the entire roading corridor between Auckland and Whangārei and is looking at how it can accelerate the delivery. Pleased to see this release from Simeon Brown this week... where the government confirms that NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi will approach the Northland Roads of National Significance as a single strategic corridor, with Warkworth to Wellsford the first section being focussed on. This first section is confirmed in the first phase of seven RoNS project and helpfully is already consented. To unlock Te Tai Tokerau Northland's economic potential and increase our GDP by ~$2.3b per annum we need the full corridor from Auckland to Whangārei upgraded to a quality 4 lane expressway. Our co-chair, Andrew McLeod spoke with the Newshub team this week on the welcome re-opening of the Brynderwyns. Andrew reminded viewers that the Brynderwyns route is not a permanent solution and that we need a 4 lane expressway from Warkworth to Whangārei to ensure an efficient and resilient connection to Auckland. In a tough economy, business life gets even harder when critical electricity transmission infrastructure fails. Resilient and efficient infrastructure is critical for business confidence and productivity and we echo the sentiments from other business leaders that the state of Te Tai Tokerau Northland's critical infrastructure is unacceptable. We'll be closely monitoring the Transpower New Zealand investigation and Government's response. Brynderwyn Hills update: We'll be reopening State Highway 1 over the Brynderwyn Hills north of Auckland from 11:59pm on Wednesday 26 June. Roadworkers are now in the process of finishing the last of the work planned under this full closure. During the closure we've created a shoulder space, stabilised the hillside, and moved an initial 180,000 cubic metres of soil, followed by a further 60,000 following the slips in late April. It's been a big job to create a shoulder space on the narrow and windy road – the roadworkers have done an exceptional job. Thanks to Northland communities for their support during the closure. We know the closure has been disruptive. We've really appreciated people's patience, especially while we've had to work to clear additional slips. Thank you also to the roadworkers for the massive effort they've put in and for their diligent work. More than 900 people who have been involved with the project, working day and night in all kinds of conditions to keep things on track so the road could reopen as quickly as possible. Our work to stabilise both the upslopes (above the road) and downslopes (the underside of the road) wouldn't've been possible without a full closure. The huge amount of earth cut away, the levels (benches) made in the hillside, and the piles and retaining walls we've installed will help the road withstand the next severe weather event. The shoulder space we've created means that in future roadworkers can work on repairing the road without lengthy closures. It all adds up to a more reliable SH1 for Northland, vital for communities and other groups such as freight and tourism.
